Clannad (Movie and series)

Clannad is another original work by KEY/Visual Art's, which came out in the wake of extremely successful titles, Kanon and AIR. The premise is similar (multiple female characters with associated stories), but there are two major differences:

1. No sex scene bullshit
2. No Less supernatural shennanigans

That has got me intrigued, since this means the game sold based on the strength of the story and characters alone. And now, following the anime adaptations of KEY's previous titles, TOEI is now producing a movie length version of Clannad, while Kyoto Animation is following up Lucky Star and Kanon 2006 with Clannad TV.

As usual, music will be from the game, designs will be similar to Kanon's, and most if not all of the game voice cast will return.

This post will balloon in length once I get back from vacation. Also, screencaps from the KyoAni preview!

OMG NEWSFLASH Clannad After Story, the follow-up to Clannad (and what many would argue is the better half) is currently in production. Same cast, same staff, HERE WE GO AGAIN

Kyoto Animation + Key has always been a good combination in the past, so I see no reason Clannad won't be a delicious offering (lol totally ignoring Toei's version).

Kind of interested that there are no supernatural hijinks going on, since I've been told that some people are really put off of Key works due to their reliance on such things in their stories. Perhaps Clannad will be the series to attract more mainstream audiences to Key's work. Perhaps it will lead to a Planetarian OVA (please). Who knows!

One thing is for sure, anyway: moe blobs.

KyoAni's Clannad resembles that of AIR's anime. I don't hate but I would like it more if the animation was a bit like the Kanon remake. Definately can't wait for this. The movie came out the 15th. Did it premiere in theatres or was it straight to dvd?

I have high hopes for the TV series, since KyoAni know how to adapt and animate well.

The movie, I have no hopes at all. Toei enjoys changing things through adaptation to suit their vision or marketting. In my opinion anyways.... I mean the Air movie was just dismal, and some of my favourite manga was butchered when it was animated by Toei.

Oh and don't forget Kanon 2002.

Still, can't wait for Clannad. From some of the spoilers I've read, its gonna have alot of heart wrenching moments.

Here's a nice wallpaper for you guys while we wait!

CLANNAD heh? It's airing in October 5th...not a long waiting.

Well, it IS worth waiting, since the storyline (from what I read), is far more intrigue, complex, and sadder from any previous works, since most of the characters have very dull past. Besides, the drawing is unexpectedly awesome. Kyoto Animation surely teams well witk KeY Visual Art.

However, the storyline is still a bit supernatural in somewhat ways. The visual novel states the story is to be supernatural; traveling into an illusionary world.

Yeah, the supernaturalness is more subdue and subtle, but its still there.

So many shows to catch this season...

I don't know if anybody is able to read this stuff, but the anime website has a list of the staff/cast: this thing can be clicked!

Also, there's a TV trailer that seems to include a remixed version of Mag Mell. I like the original better, but then I like Mag Mell better than pretty much anything else in the world. It'd be hard to improve it: click for (a) good time(s)!

Yes, that's right; there is a remixed version of Mag Mell. In fact, this version (real title: Mag Mell ~cuckool mix 2007~) is the opening theme of the TV series. I'm not really surprised by this; Key's previous animation has been taking soundtracks (almost) directly from the game/visual novel.

I think the original Mag Mell is better, but in fact, I don't really like Mag Mell that much; AIR'S Tori no Shi is better for me.

Less than a week before this series starts airing. Needless to say, if this is even half as good as Kanon, then it'll be another hit for KyoAni.

In the meantime enjoy the following:

The ED:

The ending in particular caught my eye as the information I've read regarding this show makes it very suitable and in line with the themes that Clannad will focus on.

I downloaded the Prelude video, and it looks fantastic.

Now all I need is the full versions of the new 2007 remix of the opening song, and the new ending song as well.

Single will be out on 26th October. Hope someone here can upload it when its out.

uƒƒOƒƒ‹^‚‚‚‘‰‘viKey Sounds Labelj@•i‰

Both opening and ending animation were different but beautiful , the ending one made me feel a little sad and happy at the same time... Its like the picture book from Chobits.

First episode should air tonight I believe.

Anyone can recommend me which sub group to get the episodes from? The translations I found on the Prelude video from AnimeSuki seem only passable...

Also, Lia released an Insert song for the MOVIE version of Clannad called "Yakusoku" (Promise). Anyone can upload this?

I watched the raw and could barely stand the 4:3 cropped video, this series should be enjoyed in its full glory (and the widescreen version won't be out for another three weeks, damn it).

Tomoyo Kick blew me out of my chair. I find it funny, though, that the biggest moeblob on the show is a middle-aged married woman.

Woah, Widescreen version not out for 3 weeks?!

What the hell? Is there a delay for BS-i's broadcast?

So has anyone got any opinions on which subgroup to go with? I'm thinking of going with TheWaffleHouse+Sprocket since they (that is, TWH) are translating the game as well and should have a pretty solid understanding of the story, which would hopefully mean quick and accurate translations. I don't know anything about Philantrophy-Sekai though...

I'm grabbing boths subs now.

Are there any other teams planning to do Clannad? a.f.k.?

EDIT:

Nerghh....

I'm watching episode 1 now (TWH/Sprocket version) and what Blah said is absolutely right. The cropped version is almost unwatchable, stuff gets cut off that is actually important (MOUTHS, EYES). It's a pretty terrible experience.

The show seems really great though. I think I'll actually hold out for the widescreen versions of these. And TWH/Sprocket is definitely better.

Just downloaded SS-Eclipse's version since they release promising episodes with quality. However both avi and mkv versions are full screen =/. Yeah, I'll wait for the widescreen as well. The opening is the best song I've heard since AIR's opening theme.

And I'm guessing there IS a 3 week delay for the widescreen episodes?

God, usually when a show appears on multi channels or networks, the delay isnt' that severe.

I way underestimated CLANNAD.

I thought "yet another popular show that usurps all the attention from the gems" but then I actually WATCHED episode one and there was so much win I was amazed. I was surprised by the lol content and I like the girl's parents already XD

You guys were right, watching it in Pan and Scan instead of widescreen is unbearable. You either feel cramped in the still shots, or you feel dizzy at the moving camera ones cause you know part of the image is missing.

Looks like most of us have to wait...

The first episode was great despite that.Obviously they have to reduced the material alot, but this is probably the longest game Key has ever made, even the character descriptions on Wiki were pretty damn long.

Just watched the second episode.

For some unknown reason this anime is hinting a very sad ending, i just can't ignore that fact that someone would die or something.

So melodramatic i just love it
