GFF is a hellhole full of elitists who chat about everything EXCEPT games. We have a team of dedicated moderators who will ban your ass on the slightest provocation, constant member-organized activities that you are not allowed to participate in, and plenty of custom features, including our unique journal system where you can post entries that will be completely ignored. If this is your first visit, be sure to check out the FAQ or our GFWiki. You will have to register before you can post. Although membership is completely free (and gets rid of the pesky advertisement unit underneath this message) we do not recommend that you sign up, because you will get kicked in the nuts repeatedly.

A general anime question:
I have a friend who is obsessed with history, and also, thanks to pokemon, thinks that all anime is total shit, and not worth a few seconds of his time. I feel it is necessary to entice him into getting his head out of his ass. Is there any good anime out there which is basically a historical treatment or view of feudal Japan? I suspect that there is, but I cannot think of any. |
|
Well, if have can apprecate historic fiction go with Kenshin for sure...
OMG how could i forget this, GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES!...wow, that is like the prefect one, WWII Japan, all i need to say and here is a list of all the anime on animenfo that has a 'historic setting' http://www.animenfo.com/animebygenre.php?genre=15 I will let you thumb throught aht yourself, but gave of the fireflies is the best thing your guna get |
|
I seriously don't think Kenshin is respectful enough for someone who has formed their opinion on anime based on pokemon. Red hair and all those special moves, you know. It's still more respectful than Ninja Scroll or Basilisk, but..
Grave of the Fireflies is a good choice, though it's not quite "feudal" in the sense. If only Lone Wolf & Cub was available as an anime. Try to get your friend to read the manga. EDIT: Oh yeah, Hakkenden - Dog Warriors is pretty good. The legend it's based on and the story has some supernatural tones, but the action itself is mostly realistic and dignified. Quite tragic too. Then there's Victorian Romance Emma, if he's into British history. A highly tasteful, mature romance series. |

Fjordor, if your friend is interested in manga, he should really check out Vagabod, based on some famous samurai novel. It is set around the beginning of the Tokugawa period (right after the battle of Sekigahara), and although it focuses mainly on the main character's swordsmanship, you also get a lot of background on that time.
I also believe that the first half of Otogizoushi is set in the Heian period, and many people don't like it because of the tons of information, but you might want to check that one out. |

I want to know name this old anime?
is old anime and i want to know name?japan or english name will good. ![]() Edit: I found it is Manga Sarutobi Sasuke. |
Actually, my friend is not so much into modern japanese culture at all. I think, however, that I might have piqued his interest with my description of Lone Wolf and Cub. Now, I think I'll let that fester a bit, and then provide the manga. ![]() Do you know where I might find scans of Vagabod? I cannot find it on Boxtorrents, and I don't know where else to look. Thanks again. |

Where can I find streaming Pokemon episodes?
Anyone know where I can find series 1 of the Pokemon anime to stream? I don't feel like buying the dvd(s), because I don't want to watch that many.

I'm thinking about buying Excel Saga on DVD, so I have a question about the different versions. Mainly I just want to know if there is any difference between the individual volumes and the Imperfect collection. Right now it's looking cheaper to buy the individual volumes, but I don't want to miss out on anything extra the collection might have.
|
|
dont quote this, but im pretty sure that the Excel Box, is a box of the individuals...like i said, dont quote that, if you really wana know email ADV thats the best way to find out
|
|
Yeah, that's what it looked like when I saw it at the store one day. I just wanted to make sure.
I guess it really doesn't matter anyway, as I can get the individual volumes for about $25 less than the boxset. I don't think any extras are worth that much to me anyway. |
