HOW TO: rip music, sound effects, or movies from PS1 & PS2 games

If you are trying to rip music, sound effects, or movies from PS1 games I hope I can help you here.

First, music get PsxMC here: http://homepage2.nifty.com/~mkb/ It's best for getting music, sence you can change the freq. to 44.1k for the .wav files. (there is a password out there somewhere for the non-free version...but it was lost with my last how to thread). You can also try PSMplay (here: http://segu.psxemu.com/ ) , there are 2 versions of this program, both the old and new versions have +/-. Last is PSound here: http://snailrush.online.fr/ It scans through all sounds on the disc, meaning you can listen to sound efx's and sample's from PSF! You can't make PSF's with it, just listen to each individual instrument. You can also get these programs here: http://www.zophar.net/utilities/psxutil.html

If you get PSMplay working you should be able to rip the .str movies easily, thus I provide the STR decoder for TMPGEnc so you can convert them stright to an mpg movie like they were origenaly encoded, if you don't want to make .avi files. Put it in your TMPGEnc directory.

You could also just use EAC for getting redbook audio stright from the game (Like JetMoto or Wipeout games) . Also use Lame for converting your new wav's to mp3 =) (see moguta's faq).

Ripping from PS2 games...is a little bit more involved.
You'll want to get the files I will upload, but you'll need to read this to use them or the links I provide. O_O

First get GiGaHeRz's FMV Search & Extract Tool aka FMV Tool Beta 05 from here: http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55165 . Installing it and getting it working I will not go into because I got an error or to that were just crazy and I don't know how I fixed them myself but anyway, read that thread for info and any help you might need.
With this program you will be able to find most hidden PSS files that were "locked" inside of .pak files and such, unfourchantly Kingdom Hearts and The Bouncer have special square made formats that have not been cracked yet (though I paln to record the movies of kingdom hearts with my capture card some day soon watch on hongfire for them XD ). You can get the hidden videos from games like Xenosaga with this prog =) I will provide the games I have scanned already for you guys to use.

I will provide CubeMediaPlayer 2 Here =). With this and finding videos I use it to get the ADX vids that you find in games like Tales of Symphonia. Put your CD/DVD into your rom drive, then when you search I find best luck if I just search for video otherwise it seems to take a day or 2 for it to finish searching for files....to convert or save the files save the CRI videos and then use a newer version of TMPGEnc so you can convet them to a useable file format such as MPEG which is basicly what CRI video is...high quality MPEG-1 video and Mp2 audio.

Next you'll need PssDemux, It's better the PssPlex in many ways and it's much smaller, to split the video and audio from PSS files into an MPEG-2 stream and a .Wav file. One good thing about PSS files unlike PS2 games the videos themselfs are progressive scan video which is great except for games like DMC because they record the cinamas from the ingame engine which is interlaced as pss files =(, so they look like crap enstead of say, the FFX-2 videos...

Now you need a program like TMPGEnc to mix the video and audio stream into an mpeg video (I do Mpeg-2 movie rips myself), or you can do xvid or whatever you like with them.

My Settings for TMPGEnc are: Audio: MP2> tooLAME> 256k or Better. Go to Options> Environmental setting> sound to "install" your audio codecs. I wouldn't use any other MP2 encoder and mp3's don't work well with MPEG-2 video. So unless you can do dolby or THX encodes...you woun't really get much better, that I know of at least. Video: Go to Settings, in the Video tab after you drag and drop the mpeg-2 and wav files onto the TMPGEnc main screen, (just exit out of the first menu that comes up), under the video tab the aspect ratio maybe may need to be changed but 1:1 (VGA) 50% of the time works fine. Rate Control Mode: I use Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR) then in the settings tab next to it Quality 100, Max bitrate: 10,000 (or so I change it judging from the quality of the video to begin with) Min bitrate: 3000. VBV Buffer I leave at 0 (auto). Profile Level: Main Profile & Main Level is what you want if you want to make a DVD from these vids otherwise you will get errors. Encode mode should be non-interlace. DC Component precision I put to the highest I can get. Motion Search Presision: Highest Quality.
On the Advanced Tab I don't have to do anything to 99% of the time so..
GOP structure: Make sure Detect Scene Change is checked.
Quantize Matrix: Click on the pull down box, change it to CG/animation. Then check No motion search by half pixel.
Audio: Mpeg-1 audio layer II frequency is normally 44100 or 48000, Stereo, bitrate whatever you want, the higher the better.
System: Stream Type, should be MPEG-2 Program (VBR)

Now for Audio ripping, you have 2 choices afaik, that work at least 40% of the time.

PSound again, it doesn't "see" DVD's but it can still read audio.dat files and similar types. I used this program to get the music and voices from Bloodryane. It doesn't alway get the interleve right though so audio can sound messed up.

Cube Media Player can do the same as PSound but it's slow...thought you can guess what the interleave and offset are untill you get it right (good luck though XD).

Alright testing my old save of this I'll try to clean it up...

Go read the thread I linked too, it'll tell you more about how to get it set up right.

No, it looks for hidden .pss and mpeg-2 files. You'll need to use PSound or Cubed Media Player for music.

Probably a penis.

Yes... (/me baka)

btw... I'm trying to use Cube Media Player...

I have been able to extract one of the audio tracks in the dvd of .hack//Infection...

I don't understand how to set the interleave... 16? 32? 64? 128? ...? (I tried to put "32", but i really don't know what it is...) And start offset?? What is??

Here is a screen and here is the file...

Does anyone can download it and tell me if the compression is ok? I think there is too noise in background... and... a "metallic" sound... hmmm... :\

EDIT:

Hmm.. it seems with interleave = 16 the sound is better... Test 2

Double Post:
Strange... i found only this audio track in the dvd... I think the others are hidden in some .bin files in "Stream" folder but can't open it with Cube nor with Isobuster, WinIso, WinImage, Alcohol 120% and UltraIso...

What software can I use to open this .bin files? :\

Inside there is a .ccs file (4GB) but when I try to extract it I get a CRC32 error message and the operation breaks...

Does anyone can help me or i must give up?

I've used Cube Media Player to scan my Zone of Enders 2 disc (ZOE2\VOX.DAT) but the results sound garbled.

When I use PSound, the only sounds it finds are the voice over actor recordings.

Any tips?

I think the last time I attempted this I think I learned the MGS and ZOE game had something unusual about them.

I just got Cube Media Player. So far, I've tried searching Worms Armageddon and DDRMAX for audio files. It found the Worms songs, and they played fine. They were .xa files, iirc.

As for DDRMAX, it didn't recognize that a disc was in the drive. So, I had to search the files on the disc itself. I found a file under the data/sound folder that contains all the 15-sec samples you hear when choosing a song as well as a few other music files. They are all ADPCM files. Unfortunately, they don't play properly. I can tell what song they're supposed to be, but it's kind of garbled and stuttery. I've tried changing the interleave and improved it just a bit, but it's still pretty messed up.

Any tips?

Check out my original music at my Soundcloud page!

Latest music rips (updated January 10, 2012):

SimCity DS - Jazz/ambient/electronic music including interesting reworkings of songs from the fantastic SimCity 3000 soundtrack
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

Keep raising the interleave by the 10,000s until you get to a part where it sounds somewhat better then start raising it by the 1,000s until it sounds almost accurate, then by the 100s until it sounds almost good. Stop when it starts sounding worse. If there's a preset interleave close to where you're at then use it. If not then type in multiples of 16. If the left and right audio channels are playing perfectly synchronously but there's skippage (meaning brief intervals of silence every few seconds or so) either raise the number of channels and find the new interleave or manually edit the silence out (I recommend method #1).

In most cases it's probably due to the audio being of multi-channel and no audio ripper ( To my knowledge ) can handle those kind of files. You could however try PSound as that handles ADPCM files quite well.
