Feature: Levels Are Back

You can now view a user's "level" in their postbit once again. Levels are calculated using this formula:

log10 (POSTCOUNT) ^ 3) + 1

This makes it increasingly harder to level up on higher levels.

I'm pretty sure that was always the formula, or at least something in that region. You tend to get the first 20-25 or so levels really quickly, then up to about 35 take around about 100 posts each, at which point I've never been higher. 60 is somewhere around 10000 though, I believe.

Good to see this readded, are we gonna have EXP too? It makes sense to have either both added or removed, and since we have levels they might aswell be added.

Just being a bit picky, I do appreciate the hard work of course. =P

I agree, that was somehow nice.

Um, bobo...

How many people do you think understand this formula?

Would 3*log[10]|POSTCOUNT| + 1 be any more efficient calculation-wise?

Man, I tried my own system for levels in an IPB hack, and ended up with a formula like this:

(($levelco / 2) + sqrt(($levelco * $levelco / 4) + ($levelco * 2 * $postcount))) / $levelco;

Works exactly the same, just different points of levelling.

And it would be nice to have the percents back!

Nice, now the levels mean something more again.

How about HP and MP too? (no)

I'd rather see the class system back then the HP and MP.

I don't see any chance that the HP/MP could come back. This message board has grown up, fortunately. A reincarnation of the class system would be awesome, though.

HP/MP was a joke.

I'd completely forgotten about the class system too, it's been quite a long time since we had that. That was pretty cool, though I don't know how much stuff we really need cluttering up on the left. Maybe now that we don't have ratings any more it could fill the big grey space next to the flag though...

From a technical standpoint, probably not; integer operations are faster than floating point ones, so log(POSTCOUNT ^ 3) + 1 has one step in which a floating point number is used (the addition), while 3 * log(POSTCOUNT) + 1 has two (the addition and multiplication).

This is assuming PHP's internal representation of integers and floating point numbers is different. Also, based on the speed of current computers, this would likely only make a difference if you're doing about fifty billion calculations or so, in which case you'd lop off a couple of seconds. So it probably doesn't matter much either way.

The final reason it wouldn't make a difference is that I don't think that's the formula in the first place.

I'd also like to see our official postcount displayed somewhere near our avatar. Ever since hitting level 20 or so, I stopped caring about levels and put more attention to the postcount. I'd also like the voting system back as well.
When Smokers try to lasso him, he grabs their tongues and pulls them to HIM instead.

When Hunters jump on him he flips them over, pins them to the ground, and rips out their teeth one at a time.

When Boomers vomit on him he wipes himself off, shoots peptobismol into their mouths, and performs liposuction on them before splattering their brains on the wall.

When a Tank throws a chunk of concrete at him he rolls up his sleeves and puts on boxing gloves.

When a Witch gives him lip he pulls his hand back and slaps that bitch right in the mouth.

I don't really understand the level up system. What if we get to level 100 (And GFF doesn't crash again)? Do we get to be a co-founder or something? Do we get money? What is the point of leveling up?

In video games, We get something when we reach a certain level.
In pokemon we get evolution.
In Final fantasy we get new moves.
In gamingforce we get.....

What does that make someome with 2000 posts? Using my scientific calculator I got Level 11 as my answer. But last I checked I had ~2000 posts on the old GFF and was over level 30.

EDIT: Oops! I fucked up the order of operations:biggrin:
