This would be such an awesome idea. I think it would be great if you could prop or rate a post. This would create more interesting stats for forum posting than the current user rating system does.

What do you guys think?

How would it be different from the standard vBulletin user reputation system? I guess that unlike that system, each "prop" would have a fixed an equal weight. In the reputation system, how much each "rep hit" you give counts for is determined by factors including your own rep, and your postcount. The rep system tends to lead either drama (negrep fiesta) or rep whoring.

I like the rep system, because it lets people know when they make a post that kicks ass, but it also has some negative effects. If Bobo can code up something that's different to user reputation, though, it could well be awesomeness.

I would like it as an additional system. Like to keep track of how awesome someone is being per day, week, month ect. and how many post props they've gotten. Things like that.

Yeah, I can see how it would work. You could probably use the vBulletin rep code as a basis for it, but what you're suggesting sounds substantially different from the stock rep system, and substantially better. It's not cumulative, for one thing, and if you don't continue to be awesome, you can't just bask in bygone glory.

I dunno how often this would be used to be honest, and unless a relatively creative way for searching for propped posts exists, I don't see how useful props for posts would be after a short while.

If you could search for proped posts made with n the last length of time, or by a certain user, or with certain words in them, then yeah I can see it being pretty neat, taking you right to the good stuff, but without that the feature would seem sort of trivial I'd think.

Yeah, looks like fodder to numerically determine post of the year without having to vote. I keep getting the feeling that if one could prop posts, then the boards would just turn into an extension of chocojournal itself. People with the most props would get the highest attention as always, and unpropped posts might be considered inferior.

It's quite good idea I think. If someone will post something that deserve a prop will just have to hit the prop button just like in journal. Then we can make special section with "Most Propped Posts" and everything would be like it should be.

Then it would be easy to see what's HOT on GFF in a sec after logging in.

I think this would just turn the forums into a popularity contest (some might say the same about the rating system). Hello, I have more propped posts than you. GTFO.

This seems pretty useless to me. If you really really like a post you see then throw them a five rating or something.

If this feature is implemented, doesnt that make the rating system become obsolete?

None of that approaches this:

Allow me to share a track from this CD. Here ya go.

That wouldn't really accomplish the same thing. I mean, a lot of people dislike, for example, LeHah. Now, LeHah's posts consist primarily of pointless cursing and insults. However, once every 5th or 6th blue moon, he makes a post that's interesting/useful/hilarious. Now see, most people who dislike him would say to themselves "Wow, Lehah did something right for once." and that would be the end of it. They definitely wouldn't give a 5 rating for a single ray of light amidst a gigantic storm. And as it stands, poor LeHah gets no recognition for is post.

Won't somebody think of the LeHahs?

What do you mean 'more interesting stats'? It should be pretty obvious that people don't give props because of the content of a post but because of the author of it. So I don't see how any statistic which is totally predictable (propz kingz (Infernal Monkey,...), and queenz (Sassafrass,...) or something between king and queen (a lurker,...)) should be any interesting.

Mush is right you'll just see propping based on who posted not the content. Its the same as a popular member can post something and its the shit and when a not popular member posts something with the same gist the same people flame and generally behave as children.

Well you can't rate a person a five more than once so whatever.

What if we had it so you could only prop like 5 posts a day? That might make it better.

Thats when you up his rating to a 2.

Seriously though. This would be just another thing added to bobo's already big list of things to do. At this point I'd rather see Gamingforce Home get finished so we can start on something like audio. If bobo only creates silly little popularity contest hacks all the time Gamingforce won't go anywhere.
