It's entirely about source material here. Sunken Suite gets really aggressive for a take on Dire, Dire Docks, and that kinda kills it for me. Taking Catacombs.

Everytime I Bang, ok but too brief and underdeveloped, plus the source material is tired, so I've really gotta hear something different on the arrangement side.

"Bloom Nobly" was pretty solid. The drums were the only weak aspect; the snare tone was too subdued and didn't have that punch to it. Otherwise, a nice composition and cool arrangement. Repeat factor is a little low, due to lack of a major hook, but it's still got something on that level.

"Sunken Suite" is decent, but dated. The drums entering at 1:33 were just way too loud and blistering with little in the way of refinement. If djpretzel had to do this now, I'm fairly sure he would have toned it down. That's why that approach didn't work in execution.

"Catacombs", easy call though. Great source material from Tim Follin and Solstice, and a really solid cover style medley, some of Ryan8bit's best IMO. Good stuff for the long-underway Dirge for the Follin project.

: 042 Dwelling of Duels - Catacombs Beneath the Twilight
: 227 Cradle Touhou Gegakushiden - Bloom Nobly, Cherry Blossoms of Sumizome ~ Border of Life
: 019 OC Remix - Sunken Suite
: 243 Everytime I Bang -X- - Rockman X5 Opening

Opening isn't too bad, but it's way too short and doesn't do anything notable or interesting enough in its short time frame to merit too much attention.

Sunken Suite is a very nice take on a source near and dear to my heart. The only part of the mix that's really aggressive is the drums, on account of the GOOD LORD MY EARS THEY BLEED factor. I like the first 53 seconds the best, but the rest of the track doesn't kill it at all.

I really like Bloom Nobly, Cherry Blossoms of Sumizome ~ Border of Life. I wish there wasn't so much repetition, but the piece is just solid overall. Wasn't expecting guitar to be in there at all, but it works. Ending's a bit abrupt, but this is definitely a keeper.

Gotta go with my boy Ryan8bit and Catacombs Beneath the Twilight here, though. We've got Follin bias and rock bias colliding, creating a massive explosion of HOLY AWESOME. Won its month in Dwelling of Duels, and rightly so.

019 OC Remix - Sunken Suite
A very nice, relaxing, piano-based tune. CHz's right about those drums, though; they come out of nowhere and are mixed way, way too loud and kind of break up the track.

042 Dwelling of Duels - Catacombs Beneath the Twilight
I recognize this from the BCC. The guitar work seemed really amateurish to me; nothing seemed to line up as it should. Follin wrote some complex stuff, and the player doesn't seem able to keep up.

227 Cradle Touhou Gegakushiden - Bloom Nobly, Cherry Blossoms of Sumizome ~ Border of Life
Ah, synthy goodness. It's got a vague techno-funk lit to it, and I wish it'd been a synth lead rather than a guitar, but still pretty good.

243 Everytime I Bang -X- - Rockman X5 Opening
Short but not bad.

I think that despite its deadly deadly drums, Sunken Suite still edges out the pack.
From goop we came, to goop we return.
