C002 - El Wraith vs. Son Of Liberty

Son of Liberty was really boring until it finally dawned on me exactly what the track was, then it was just hilarious.
El Wraith is good enough here. ![]()

Putting aside the fact I'm kind of a fan of Amon Tobin already, Tommie's track is, to my untrained ear, just an average techno-ish song.
I will continue to use uncertain, awkward terms like "techno-ish" and "(blank)-sounding" to avoid stepping on anyone's toes with my uninformed music descriptions. |

Okay, there are some melodies that can work well into a trance-like dance song. This one is not one of them.

Son of Liberty would probably go down well in a club, but it sounds quite average out of it. And, for some reason, I actually felt uncomfotable listening to it.
I'm not that into El Wraith either but I liked it better than Son of Liberty.

What is UP with bracket 2? Wow, middling.

"Alright, not too shabby, good energy, an-.... oh my, it's that son of liberty." And then I couldn't help laughing as it continued its progression -- ended up voting El Wraith.

I didn't like both tracks. Going with one that didn't make me sleep.

I liked both these tracks. The Amon Tobin tune is something I'd probably listen to again and whilst it's not nearly as good as anything from some of the masters of chillout (The Orb, Banco de Gaia, Orbital, Aphex Twin etc), it's decent enough. My only criticism is that it's a bit busy for my tastes but that's just me. Son of Liberty I liked and it's a decent enough trancey house tune that unlike most VGM based dance tracks doesn't sound like it was written by a 16 year old who's never been clubbing. Tough call this one but I'm going with Son of Liberty. ![]() |

I don't see this Son of Liberty track showing up on any Global Underground mixes any time soon and I like Amon Tobin so, hey, problem solved.

The Amon track was interesting, and probably gets better the more you hear it. Hopefully it wins so i can find out. It only took a few seconds to realize i didn't like Son of Liberty. Then i kept listening and it actually caught on a bit and now i don't know what to do. Doesn't really matter to me which of these advances, both were good in the end.
Music is a mysterious thing. Sometimes it makes people remember things they do not expect. Many thoughts, feelings, memories... things almost forgotten... Regardless of whether the listener desires to remember or not.

Reflexive vote against narcolepsy.
We can die heroically, comically, ironically, sadly, suddenly, slowly, disgustingly, charmingly or from a great height.

I annoy myself sometimes. In this very contest last year, I heard Amon Tobin for the first time. "This is great", I thought, and put Amon Tobin's name among a list of other 'new discoveries' in a text file. The text file was forgotten. The hard drive died. Here I am a year later kicking myself for not having tracked down more of his stuff. New list, new text file, this time Amon's name at the top.
I like El Wraith for the reason Shin criticises: it's busy. I find it hard to get into some of those more spacey artists. Son of liberty, not bad, but there's loads of identical sounding stuff out there that would do the job of this equally well. |
