Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels? Super Off-Road - SNES rock from the Follin bros. Currently playing: Geometry Wars Evolved 2 (XBLA), Half-Life 2: Episode Two (360) Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more What else do I listen to? |

Yakuza 2 - Outlaw's Lullaby
Hard to place this one--I want to say 60's spy-jazz, but even that doesn't quite cover all the bases. Regardless, it's quite good if supremely cheesy. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - VS Dark Samus Long I've never really liked Metroid music; without the gameplay experience to provide context, it all falls flat, and I've never played a game in the series. This has got to be a new nadir though--random techno loops combined into one excruciatingly dull package. This could have been written by a computer program. Outlaw's Lullaby.

Outlaw's Lullaby sounds like someone jammed a trumpet down a fat person's asshole and repeatedly jumped on him while playing the drums.

"Outlaw's Lullaby" is a very good lullaby, I wish I was put to sleep with this when I was younger. The crazy trumpet jazz is really funky and carries a pretty good melody with it. The energy's particularly infectious in this one.
Um, "Darkness (VS Dark Samus Long)" is kind of dull, isn't it? I like the ambient sounds which sound industrial in nature and the foreboding tone has been crafted exceptionally well, but this one tries to hard to mesh upbeat pacing with ambient components and ultimately falls a little flat despite having an intriguing nature. What the hell, I'll give this one my vote just for that intriguing factor alone. "Outlaw's Lullaby" - 8/10 "Darkness (VS Dark Samus Long)" - 8/10 with a bit of added ambient coolness ![]() |

Well I saw the title "Outlaw's Lullaby" and expected something yawn-inducing. Mabye another sappy piano ballad, this is GFF, after all. I then saw the composer's name as I queued up the song and before I was able to strap myself to my seat I was blown away. One of the best surprises of the year, definitely. The piano solo isn't up to par, though.
Anyone willing to upload the soundtrack? I had no idea Shoji was still around and I'm very interested in hearing the rest of the soundtrack. Did he work on Yakuza 1? Dark Samus Long has a unique soundscape that's heard nowhere else, but it's a shame it's up against one of the best songs I've come across. I will say this though: if the Prime 3 version of Dark Samus was used, it would've been a much tougher vote. |

Dark Samus is great! I love the pounding synth sounds and the crazed guitar solo out of nowhere. I'm not sure if I'm totally off base here, but I remember Gun Valkyrie having similar music, and that was a great soundtrack too.
Not a big fan of Outlaw's Lullaby, so I'm having no problem voting against it. |

Anyone else reminded of Cowboy Bebop's "Tank!" when listening to the bass line in Outlaw's lullaby?
Anyway, I want to like Dark Samus--the Metroid Prime games are some of my absolute favorites (though I haven't played one recently), and my memories inform me that the music worked really well in context--, but on its own I have a lot of trouble appreciating its 'ambient' qualities or anything else about it musically. Outlaw's lullaby, though having been done before, is upbeat enough and does well what it intends to do: jazz around. And I suppose that makes it an ultimately enjoyable listen, whereas with Dark Samus I feel that something's lacking--something significant enough to work to its detriment. Maybe that missing element is just my attention, but I'm pretty sure it's not. Outlaw's Lullaby gets it this round. |

'Outlaw's Lullaby' - It might be because I like real jazz music that I can't stand this soulless pastiche of jazz cliches that sounds like it should ensconce itself in one of the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks and be forgettable in obscurity. Not much about this stands out and all the riffing and noodly bullshit just makes it worse.
'Dark Samus Long' - I love the Metroid soundtracks, but the boss themes are not meant to be song-y in any way. Instead, they concern themselves with underscoring tension and atmosphere, and ultimately take a backseat to the sounds of battle. Not the greatest nomination. I'm going to vote for Samus' evil twin because the overall approach of Metroid music at least tries to exploit a unique style as opposed to the blatant imitation that the jazz song is.

Another extremely underwhelming pairing. Despite being a Fan of Metroid music, Darkness sounds really dull to me. Outlaw's Lullaby is extravagant, but I can´t stand the trumpets.
Abstained.

: Yakuza 2 - Outlaw's Lullaby : Metroid Prime 2: Echoes - VS Dark Samus LongDarkness is awesome because of the random guitar solo out of nowhere. Some other cool electronicrap in there too. Holy fuck Hidenori Shoji yes you are the man. Just don't write another piano solo again and you will be kicking ass for untold years to come. |
