[C] First Round #15 (Steel Works vs. Airship Theme)
Listen to both songs and select the one you prefer.
Download Links: Sparkstar - Steel Works Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Airship Theme (Super Mario Bros. 3)
Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels? Super Off-Road - SNES rock from the Follin bros. Currently playing: Nothing Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more What else do I listen to? |

Automatic vote for Steel Works. I don't know what people like about Motoi Sakuraba's Airship remix, but I detest it.

Sparkstar - Steel Works
Always exciting to see an unknown track from an unknown game. There's some nice stuff in the middle of the loop that I wish had been expanded on; the rest is simply okay. Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Airship Theme (Super Mario Bros. 3) Sakuraba inspires some heated exchanges, and so does Brawl. Put 'em together and what have you got? Something that sounds a lot like the original with a lot of intrusive and poorly-mixed drums laid over the top, and a bizarre prog-ish breakdown in the middle. It's pure Motoi B, unfortunately; check out Super Mario Galaxy for a much better remix of the same theme. Steel Works. ![]() From goop we came, to goop we return.

Steel Works has been a classic favorite of mine for many years.
I think Sakuraba's Airship arrangement works, but I'm no fan of it.

I remember the first time I listened to Airship Theme and those drums kicked in. It's as enjoyable as it is hilarious.
Steel Works is a classic and by far the best in the soundtrack. It comes closer to the Konami SNES Trifecta (SCIV, Contra III, Axelay) than most others, which is a huge achievement. |
As much as I approve of all three soundtracks in your Konami SNES Trifecta, I would consider myself remiss if I didn't turn it into a five-piece by adding Gradius III (somewhat better than the arcade version to my ears) and Legend of the Mystical Ninja (catchy, catchy, catchy) to those three.

"Steel Works" does sound like a Steel Works sort of tune, that's for sure. I like the subtle jazz infusions and the rockin' lead melody, even though it's somewhat unsubstantial. Still, nice enough piece, I don't really have any problems with it.
"Airship Theme" didn't really work for me. For some reason during the first loop I forgot that I was listening to music; everything sounded so standard. I really tried listening to the 2nd half, but still didn't find anything interesting. Now I'm not one of those SSBB haters, but I'm definitely not a fan of this particular arrangement. "Steel Works" - 7/10 "Airship Theme" - 3/10 |

Steel Works isn't bad and is catchy. Love that guitar sample... thing.
But the problem is is that Airship theme is an example of why I love Motoi arranging . . . he arranges better than he composes. Those fucking drums and realistic fast bassline? Holy god. DOUBLEKICKDRUM IS AWESOME AND Y'ALL SUCK. Also, prog-organ is always a good thing. |
: Sparkster - Steel Works : Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Airship Theme (Super Mario Bros. 3)Sakuraba what have you done Well, make me laugh, I guess. His tracks in this BSC are fantastic. Steel Works: best track from the best version of Sparkster. Awesome energy and ass-kicking quotient. I kind of want to vote for Airship Theme for hilarity, but Steel Works is just too good. |
