Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels? Super Off-Road - SNES rock from the Follin bros. Currently playing: Nothing Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more What else do I listen to? |

Musashi: Samurai Legend - White Whale of Heaven
One of the less bland tracks from a bland OST is still pretty dull when heard out of context. Low-key synth washes might be good for setting a relaxed mood, but they're not the best listening material apart from the game. Earthbound - Kraken of the Sea I have to admit being a big Earthbound fan, so my perception of this song is admittedly biased. But what's not to love about hard-core SNES techno with that trademark EB quirk for spice? Kraken. ![]() From goop we came, to goop we return.

Hehe, some of these pairings really amuse me in a lame, nerdy way. (kraken? whale? WATERBEASTS! lol)
"White Whale of Heaven" has quickly become a favourite of mine. I love the style of downtempo electronica here, and those deep pad hits are sexy and awesome. I also really like how the background melodic harmonies are introduced. A huge pat on the back for Hamauzu~! "Kraken of the Sea" is pretty slick, and essentially makes for a really fun listen. The electronica twinges don't capture me as much as the synth washes of its opponent, but all of the quirk and ^___^ is really cool. Overall this track is great because it manages to do so much with so little. "White Whale of Heaven" - 9/10 "Kraken of the Sea" - 8/10 |
Kraken beat a very good track last round, and I hope it doesn't do it again. White Whale is pure heaven (pun not intended, seriously), and the whole track makes you feel like you're lifted up a bed of pure bliss. I may have wrote this last round, but the deeper you go, the more rewarding it is. |

Musashi - I love the OST, and this track is nice too, there are better things on the OST though. The guitar is nice, the introduction of piano is superb.
Kraken - I loved this track. It was new to me. Musashi did a good job, a better job than Kraken on the quality of layering. But Kraken has the power of quirkiness and odd harmony. It has also the advantage of using counter rhythm and playing on the different frequency spectrum. I'll need my coin again. And it is: Kraken. |

White Whale of Heaven is a gorgeous ambient piece. I still love it.
But I have a bias and it is for Earthbound. |

Both great songs, but which should I choose? The exotic, mellow, downtempo chill song that sounds amazing enough to lay back to on the beach? Or a song that brings back fond memories of my SNES RPG playing days?
Coin toss says: White Whale "Who the hell do you think I am?!"
