005 - Code Name Viper (NES) - Stages 3 & 4 (Mayan Ruins)* 252 - Chinese Paladin (Adlib) - Peach Blossom Dream *The song is tagged as Jungle Suite (stages 1 & 2), but it is apparently the music for stages 3 & 4, which take place in Mayan ruins.
Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels? Super Off-Road - SNES rock from the Follin bros. Currently playing: Nothing Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more What else do I listen to? |

Stages 3 & 4 (Mayan Ruins) is all over the place and nothing really memorable forms out after it's all said and done.
Peach Blossom Dream still has that ethereal quality (and wavy sfx's!) I like about it, and it gets a vote. |

The mistagging on Code Name Viper (NES) - Stages 3 & 4 (Mayan Ruins) is my fault; when I nominated the tune, I hadn't played the game in about ten years, so things were a little...fuzzy. The thing that sold me on this song was the amount of variation on a basic sound that it packs into a fairly small area. The driving melody goes through several major variations while remaining tied together by the rhythm, instrument choice, and key. It helps that I really like each of the melodic movements, too. And can anyone confirm who wrote this? I heard that it was Yoko Shimomura, and tagged it as such, but was never able to get a definitive answer.
The Chinese Paladin tracks I'ved heard thus far have potential that they generally fail to live up to; Chinese Paladin (Adlib) - Peach Blossom Dream follows this trend. It's very subdued, to the point of being rather dull, with the admittedly nice melody stretched like taffy to accomodate the lugubrious pace. The end result is what something like Legend of the Lone Wolves might sound like as a retiree. Gotta go with my nom here. Viper it is! ![]() From goop we came, to goop we return.

Stages 3 & 4 sounds too chaotic for my taste. I prefer Peach Blossom Dream which *may* sound a tad boring, but is obviously the better choice here. At least as far as I am concerned.

Whoops forgot mah post: Stages 3&4 isn't awful. It's got some really interesting bits, but not wonderful, either.
Peach Blossom Dream was the least of 4 really good tracks in the prelims. It'll get my vote here easily. |

"Code Name Viper" is quite enjoyable, with upbeat melodies and a decent deal of variations. However, the backing instruments are a little dry compared to some other NES tunes I enjoy (i.e. Konami, Sunsoft, etc.). In my eyes, that would be the weak point.
Quite different, "Peach Blossom Dream" is mysterious, in a light atmosphere. Another thing I'd categorize as being "light" is the piece as a whole. This doesn't mean that it is bad, sure not, but there's just not much to drool about. Enjoyable as well, when a calm ambiance needs to be created. Well, it's close; I'll go with the Jungle Suite. |

I don't find anything wrong with the instrumentation, but there are two particular instances of disgust that really annoy: at 0:04 in the bass (?) line, and at 0:22 in the accompaniment of the melody. The rest of the song is decent, though.
I only voted for one track in that special, but that was because it was awesome, and not because the others sucked. Peach Blossom Dream is good, though it does get a bit dull at times. Still, it does nothing disgusting, and I'll give this one the point. |
Tough'un, this. Jungle Boogie comes of as a cross between NES Strider and Bionic Commando - definitely a good thing. But Peach is still so damned pretty. Mmmmnnn...Jungle, but no qualms if Peach takes it. DAMN good coffee!

: 005 - Code Name Viper (NES) - Stages 3 & 4 (Mayan Ruins) : 252 - Chinese Paladin (Adlib) - Peach Blossom DreamPeach Blossom Dream is soooooooo slooooooooooow. Still not a bad song, but I prefer Mayan Ruins's more upbeat melody, though. It's just a more interesting song. |

Codename: Viper - Level 3 & 4 has some decent parts, but I just can't stand the main melody and rhythm (what plays at the beginning and then becomes the bass line at a later part). And to be honest, though they it may be decent, I'm not that fond of the rest of the song.
Peach Blossom Dream is slow, but it's a good slow song. It's not boring at all to me.
