Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):

Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?
Super Off-Road - SNES rock from the Follin bros.

Currently playing: Nothing

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

What else do I listen to?

I like the quirky, vaguely Eastern stylings of Rocket Knight Adventures (Gen) - Stage 1-1. The start-and-stop intro, followed by some very nice melodic material are both interesting and fairly original. I wasn't as crazy about the brief slower interlude, but it only lasted for about three seconds.

My subconscious anti-Pikachu bias had me wanting to hate Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal (GB) - Goldenrod City from square one. It's really not that bad, with a decent melody and rhythmic work. The song's weak point is that it's rather simple and by-the-numbers, which is a fairly large disadvantage in this pairing.

My vote's for the delightful Rocket Knight, though I bear its competitor no ill will.

I swear, part of Stage 1-1 sounds like a Pokemon route song. All said and done though, I prefer Goldenrod City.

I'll grant that both songs are pretty solid, but Stage 1-1 is getting my vote in the end. It's actually constructive with it's added complexity.

Stage 1-1 is really damn good. It's been a few pairing since I've been able to say that about a track. The Pokemon song isn't a bad thing either.

Damn this bracket. All these pairings with shitty songs and I have to kick out a decent one in this one.

Stage 1-1 gets mah vote.

Automatic NINTENDO vote! Oops, wait, I almost forgot Pokémon is up there with Kirby in my negative bias. But hey, I'm trying hard not to be biased since the beginning of the contest, so I shall try to continue.

"Goldenrod City" feels like many other generic tunes from elementery-school-age-aimed-games, which I'm really not a fan of. Damn bias, but at least I've tried! I've heard worse however, but not in this pairing. This track from "Sparkster" is OK, although I prefered the one from the prelims (not that it matters here anyway). I'm voting for it.

The original Rocket Knight Adventures went by one name only: Rocket Knight Adventures.

Goldenrod City oozes out of every orifice, but it's up against my obligatory compositional merit nom, and so far I've only heard one track in the contest that I'd vote over this, bias included.

Oh, I didn't even know there has been more than a game in that series. Thanks for correcting me.

Stage 1-1 is pretty nice, presenting the armored opossum with a heroic intro. But if I hear that repeating passage one more time...

Goldenrod City is more conventional, very cutesy & upbeat. I'm going for it, adding that I have no bias for Pokemon; neither positive nor negative.

: 101 - Rocket Knight Adventures (Gen) - Stage 1-1
: 156 - Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal (GBC) - Goldenrod City

ROCKET KNIGHT ADVENTURES HELL YESH

Stage 1-1 is freaking epic. I love the end of the loop when it slows down for all of five seconds, and then has an alarm. Ca-razy.

Goldenrod City is ^____^, but the jetpack opposum wins handily.
