Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels? Super Off-Road - SNES rock from the Follin bros. Currently playing: Nothing Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more What else do I listen to? |

The beginning of Gauntlet (NES) - Track 5 really sounds familiar. I mean, really, really familiar, like the composer took an existing piece of classical music and interpolated it for an 8-bit sound card. This is going to be bugging me for a while, I can feel it.
Hey, Altered Beast (Gen) - Level 1, Holst called. He wants his bass progressions back. Seriously, though, while the opening part reminded me very much of "Mars, Bringer of War," the later portions are more original, if somewhat less memorable and repetitive. Didn't really care for either of these. I guess I'll pick Altered Beast. ![]() From goop we came, to goop we return.

Yeah, Track 5 sounds familiar, I guess orion_mk3 is right with his assumption that there might be a heavy influence from a specific piece of classical music. Maybe someone can clear this up. It also reminds me of Soul Blazer music in a way. Level one isnt´s too bad either. While I must say I´m not overwhelmed, I like both tracks equally. Since Gaunlet is far behind, I will not flip the coin and support the outsider right away.

These are both nominations that were heavily influenced by nostalgia, I can tell.
I liked the Gauntlet theme better on the C64, so my bias directs me to vote for Altered Beast. ![]() |

Can't resist that Gauntlet theme. <3

It's the Gauntlet Title Theme. It's used in MC Chris's - Robutussin. It's awesome, and it's heavily influenced by classical music!
WISE FWOM YOUW GWAVE. Like I said in the BSC, this still sounds like the Sailor Moon OP. That is a BAD THING, people. |

This "Gauntlet" theme is familiar to me as well, but not this version, neither the C64 one, but rather the PSX one in Gauntlet Legends. It's interesting, although not elaborated in the most spectacular of ways. Still, I'm voting for it.
"Altered Beast" was OK, but did not thrill me. I'll leave it as that. |
: 140 - Altered Beast (Gen) - Level 1 : 117 - Gauntlet (NES) - Track 5Ugh, Track 5 is boring. Better with the noise at 0:28, better still when it picks up at 0:37, but still :bigugh:. Maybe with better instrumentation. Level 1 isn't particularly better, but sometimes it tosses out a melody that I like. Good enough. |

Gauntlet's Theme is a pretty thing. Not the best incarnation, but still outclasses the other track here.
Altered Beast - Level 1 was another familar tune. It sounded really bad. (why not the arcade version?) For all I know, it's not that great of a tune, and it could just go back to its GWAVE. |
