Mhh, Mud Level sounds muddy. Very bloopy and aggressive. Strange sound. Daddy Mulk on the other hand is a classic. I personally prefer the the arcade version for its better synth, but this rendition is fine with me. Daddy Mulk has to move on.

I'm really liking Mud Level's aggressive tone, so it's a real shame it has to be up against my #1 nom.

I first heard Daddy Mulk in BSC '05 (iirc). I quite liked it, but I'm not sure I appreciated it as fully as I should have. Anyway, somehow I stumbled onto The Ninja Warriors while looking for potential chiptune noms. After finding out there were a bunch of versions of the game and listening to how Daddy Mulk sounded in a few of them, I decided upon the TG-16 version (it was the best one that still sounded chiptune-y, imo).

I'm not sure why I just explained all that. Regardless, Daddy Mulk is an insane song considering it's originally from a 1988 arcade game. Most of the songs from back then were not 4+ minute long works with a good melody, little repetition, and extensive quality soloing mixed in.

I like Mud Level, but DM gets my vote here.

The Ninja Warriors (TG-16) - Daddy Mulk has a nice synthy melody and rhythm going. It's not the most distinctive or creative track (except for that name...what the hell is a "mulk?"), but it's solid.

"Muddy" is definitely an apt descriptor for Project S-11 (GBC) - Mud Level. I have to commend the composer for taking a more experimental approach with the song, and there's definitely a nice melody buried under the muck. But the muddy sound breaks up the song terribly, shattering chords and notes into hundreds of fragments. I can only imagine how beautiful that last bit would be if it were cleaned up.

Battle of the Mu comin' liek wut. Mud had potential and creativity on its side, but blew it. Mulk was more vanilla, but suceeded.

Augh, why did these get paired together? Don't make me pick.

I really liked Mud Level, myself. Makes me extremely curious to look up the entire soundtrack. Sounds like it could use the votes, so I'll bolster up the minority vote.

Mud Level is fucking impressive, and I never quite liked Daddy Mulk to start with. *This* is a good example of exerimental C64 goodness.

Daddy Mulk. Well, it's famous for reasons mentioned by Drakken. It's good. Zuntata has some really good shit.

Mud Level's entertaining, as well. What the fuck is up with this bracket?

I'm gonna give the vote to the lesser known in case it has a chance.

Mud Level's from a GBC game. (?)

And I just noticed that Sunsoft had a hand in Project S-11. That explains the goodness.

Yeah, Sunsoft is a good word to be associated with, yet I believe Jonne Valtonen, or "Purple Motion", can handle his reputation on his own when it comes to music. And in this case, while I've heard better from him and this one is a bit oppressive until the melody at the end, it's still a hit! You can definitely feel the demoscene influences.

Argh, why is it "Daddy Mulk" that I've seen when I've turned around? This makes things though! I like this theme very much, for all the same good reasons people have enumerated since it was discovered. However, I also prefer the Arcade version, and I think that you should have nominated that one instead, Drakken. But I know out definitions of chiptunes are diverging on some points, so I guess it's better this way. Anyway, it's the same song at the base. But it's missing the mechanical voice effect.

What's my decision? I'll go with "Daddy Mulk", but feel sad for "Mud Level".

Yeah, I find Daddy Mulk overrated, though that solo was always fun.

I'm extremely impressed with Mud Level. Weird as hell in a good way. Perhaps one of my favorites in the bracket. Shame it's dying a horrible horrible death.

EDIT: Woah, I had no idea Purple Motion did Mud Level, though now I feel stupid for not figuring that out before. Awesome.

: 204 - Project S-11 (GBC) - Mud Level
: 053 - The Ninja Warriors (TG-16) - Daddy Mulk

Oh my God, Mud Level is amazing. Holy hell. On my first listen, I swear I heard a chorus patch in there. On the GAME BOY. Melody become progressively defractured as the song goes on, rockin' accompaniment, and fist to the face at 1:17. I started looking for a GBS while the song was still playing the first time.

I like Daddy Mulk, but Mud Level NEEDS to move on immediately.

Additional Spam:
So I'm listening to the GBS of Project S-11, right. And it turns out there's like a whole bunch more song to Mud Level. I'm talking loads here. Lemme dump this to MP3.

I mean, holy shit, this is going on forever.

Additional Spam:
Okay, it wasn't quite as long as I first thought, but the official copy is still missing about half of the loop.

http://www.quiteajolt.com/gff/204%20-%20Mud%20Level.mp3

This probably isn't dreadfully important seeing as Daddy Mulk has a decent lead.

Hey, who's the idiot who recorded Mud Level? I've got the GBS cued up right now, and the song plays all the way to 2:47 before reaching the loop point. This recording here is essentially cut off halfway. I don't know that having the complete song would change anything, since the remainder of the song is more of the same, but Mud Level didn't get a very fair shake here.

EDIT: Oh. CHz just posted the exact same thing. Duh. Well, my comments still stand.

I like Daddy Mulk as well, still being recent to me. But, as Rimo said, I'm missing that mechanical voice, and this alternative isn't as good as the arcade's.

But man, am I also liking Mud Level a lot. And this insanity coming out of the GB?! I grabbed the one provided by CHz, and it adds a fair lot. Daddy Mulk (for the TG-16 at least) sounds pretty lame and subdued compared to this. It gets my vote for sure.

It feels pretty awesome for loving and voting for half a song.

Daddy Mulk is getting stoned next round.

Wow, that's a real shame about Mud Level. I'm not sure who sent that to me, or why the recording would be cut off. I'll replace the link in the first post with CHz's link.

And actually, for this to be fair and accurate, a thread restart may be in order, with a note about the song. What do you think?

I guess restart.. it's essentially an entirely different audio file, and most people liked, to some extent, Mud Level if they voted the other way. I'll need to re-listen to the full mp3/gbs.

A restart would only be fair in this case (but I voted Mud Level anyway, so neothe0ne's voice weighs more =P).
