Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):

Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?
Super Off-Road - SNES rock from the Follin bros.

Currently playing: Nothing

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

Not going to make a crack about Fury of the Furries (Adlib) - Lagoon 2's title. Too easy. I think I griped about the Adlib synth in another thread, so I won't do that either. I will say that the track has potential. If only the composer had seen fit to include more of a melody along with the hyper-repetitive techno loops that make up the meat of the tune.

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - World 1 is a very special nomination of mine. I personally don't care for the song, but I nominated it on behalf of a friend that wasn't able to put together a nomination list by the deadline, and gave it a high position on my list accordingly to make sure it got into the contest. I'm pretty sure everyone's familiar with the tune; I can recall it exactly years after playing the game, so I suppose Koji earned his white lab coat as far as composition is concerned.

I'll give my vote to my peculiar psuedo-nomination. It may be the only vote it will ever get!

"World 1" is simplicity in its purest form. And I love it for that. Sorry for contradicting your theory, orion!

Wow, if I'd known tracks that short would fly in this contest, I would have started mining the Forbidden Forest games on the C64. Neat songs, save for how incredibly short they are...

I'm going to have to agree, as nice as the techno beat is in Lagoon 2, there's not a whole lot of meat there. To be honest, I would barely count any of the map themes from SMB3, but it still edges its way in at the end.

Lagoon's got a nice beat. Nothing else.

World 1's at least memorable. Exquisitely so.

I guess it's time for someone to talk in good about the "Fury of the Furries" track. It starts out with an ethereal sound for the simple, yet moving melody. Then the groove comes in, which transforms the track into smoothness until the rhythmic sections arrive, which are on one hand repetitive and too long, but are still varied and well done. Then, to end things on a good note, there is a new melodic segment, again backed up by the groove. I enjoy all of this and give "Lagoon 2" my vote.

This song from "Super Mario Bros. 3" is nice, and I feel nostalgia for it. But I don't know, at a huge 0:14 long, and even in this short lenght, it manages to be highly repetitive, I think the "there is not much meat here" comment should rather be applied for this track. I totally agree it's easily memorable, especially since there isn't much to remember. In-game, it's very fitting and you don't spend hours on the map between two stages, so it doesn't become redundant. Unfortunately, here in this context, it's a different story.

I love World 1, and short tunes need more love, but Lagoon 2 is AMAZING. I'm getting a huge demoscene vibe out of this. Adding to favorites.

EDIT: I voted for Lagoon 2 before I even finished listening to it. That says something. Heck, it just looped as I typed this.

: 108 - Fury of the Furries (Adlib) - Lagoon 2
: 149 - Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - World 1

Frederic Motte is the man. I'd have nominated his track "Serpents" from Cogito if it weren't stereo separated, because the left ear to hemorrhage profusely after the first three minutes of the song.

World 1 is almost a perfect example of how to do short songs right, but Lagoon 2. Damn.

Yay, it's Fury of the Furries! Cool game with an awesome soundtrack for its time. Though I don't recall this tune from the game, Lagoon 2 was another track I easily got lost in. This is the kind of trance/techno I usually like.

Not that World 1 is bad, but I don't think it has much oomph to make it past this round.

I'd say, for me, when a song is that brief, doesn't quite matter how well done it is, I pretty much have to hate whatever else is there not to give it a vote. And I don't hate Lagoon 2. In fact, I like it. I like it a lot.

I didn't know what this contest was about until I got curious. Nice to see gaming music get a GameFAQs kind-of tournament.

However, it's sad to see SMB3's classic World 1 getting lambasted with a day to go.

GFF has had three Best Song Contests with similar organization to this in 2004, 2005, and 2006, as well as an RPG battle track contest that never finished and a Mega Man song contest that may or may not have finished (don't recall). So yeah, there've been a lot of these one-on-one single-elimination VGM tournaments.

(not to mention Song of the Week, Song of the Year, etc.)

World 1 is one of those songs that, while catchy, is not fit for this contest. It's simply too short.

Gotta love that bass in Lagoon. It's a decent track. I'd feel weird voting for it considering its sound quality, though. Doesn't matter, since it will easily advance anyway.
