Aw crap.

(nominated The Cube)
Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):

Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?
Super Off-Road - SNES rock from the Follin bros.

Currently playing: Nothing

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

010 Ace Combat 5 The Unsung War — The Unsung War (F)

Hmm. The Cube doesn't sound too bad, actually, it's a rather nice piece of music, with some good groove and nice instrumentation. But ehh TUW is not only my #1 nomination, but it is definitely the better song. For further information, please consult my review in the previous pairing thread.

A vote for The Cube is a vote against The Unsung War.

Why do the Fates despise me so?

The Cube has energy, but no direction.
The Unsung War has purpose, but no variation.

The last time I came to a match-up this irritating, I went with the shorter, more merciful track. So be it.

10/10 The Unsung War

I think theres about... well only truly 25 songs that meet the criteria for a 10/10 from me. Even if the song is very good, I'll probably still give a 9.5/10 for it. Consult my previous post for the reasons why I give this song this score. I think it's well beyond the length required (3 pages?) to prove my point =).

7/10 The Cube

It's a decent track, which really uses its beats to produce the "full extent" of its song. Maybe the fact that the rhythms have been substituted for the melody, but in a case like this, I have a small feeling that The Cube really just needs something special, a better melody. If the rhythm was more unique, that would work well also. But I think the easiest way of getting out of that "good" category into the "really good" category is more development and uniqueness.

Oh, and don't worry about the track getting obliterated. Some of my favorite nominations are being eliminated, either by songs that I didn't initially nominate because they were obviously in the contest, or by "popular" songs. And just a note, I nominate based on what I still want to see in the contest, that's why its top 10 nominations.

I'm voting for The Cube because long choral works are not my thing, and I also voted against the Unsung War last time. Not because I dislike Ace Combat, but because I am hardly ever convinced by long dramatic singing songs. Plus, The Cube was a favourite of mine years ago.

=(

The Cube is a wonderful song, and I personally find The Unsung War pretty blah. I've heard 100 other songs just like it, and it stands out over them in no way at all. It's hard for me to focus on this song for the whole duration, as the choir is always there, for almost all of the 7 minutes. I know I wouldn't be able to listen to a 7 minute drum break, or a flute solo, and just like those, I am not won over by a choir that is the completel focus of the song. The Cube varies things up more, is more unique, and overall the better song.

I had to listen to The Unsung War several times to see what the fuss was all about. It got better with each listen, and I especially did like one part of it, where the choir take it up a notch at 3:45. Still, the rest of it was pretty boring and got old quick. I suppose it is one of those songs that work well within the context of the game.

I'm voting for The Cube for not making me fall asleep.

Maybe you're closing yourself off then?

Also, what would be a song that's what you call "the same" as Unsung War?

I voted for the cube this time, because it's not that bad, and I know it will not beat (pun) Ace Combat anyway. The beginning of the unsung war is almost painfully slow, but the choir is very good, so I don't mind its winning, though.

Beatmania IIDX 5th style — The Cube
It has some interesting percussive concepts and sounds mostly fresh, but for some reason it's not so memorable at all. I have no idea but for 1:52 it's feels very short.

Ace Combat 5 The Unsung War — The Unsung War
It's an alright song by me. What I am not too fond of is that the choir is choppy at some parts (2:24+). The rest is like: okay.

Had the Cube been a bit more memorable, I would have vote for it.

I knew I would be called out on this, because it didn't even sound right when I was typing it. I think my problem with the choir is it sounds like they're going through the same stuff the whole song. Over seven minutes, I'd prefer more variation in what they do. And, all the instruments backing them up are entirely unnoticeable. The snare just constantly marches along, the cymbals only come out when the choir is on a crescendo, yet pretty much every time it happens. The part three and a half minutes in is good though, as the song does have some variation in there, but then it jumps right back into the chants. Perhaps I just don't like it too much because when I listen to music, I don't look for music that is epic and all-encompassing. I prefer to listen to music that gives me a sense of fun, maybe a rhythm or melody that'll get stuck in my head or get me tapping my fingers.

As for similar songs, the closest thing I could name off the top of my head would be One Winged Angel, but I know that's not right. Well, maybe some of the songs on the Lord of the Rings soundtrack would be like this, with some kind of foreign chanting in an epic manner, but those were the tracks on that soundtrack I didn't care for either.

: 010 Ace Combat 5 The Unsung War — The Unsung War (F)
: 147 Beatmania IIDX 5th style — The Cube (G)

The first twenty-five seconds of The Cube are hella awesome, so naturally they're the best part of the song.

I swear, The Unsung War gets ever so slightly better each time I listen to it. It's not noticeable in the short run, but there's a very slow trend of me liking it more and more.
