Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):
Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels? Super Off-Road - SNES rock from the Follin bros. Currently playing: Nothing Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more What else do I listen to?

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Darkness / Time - Battle With Dialga
I'm glad that people rip Poketunes so I don't have to stumble through the games myself, as the music is often quite decent and belies the material it accompanies. Color me disappointed with this one, though: the opening is good and seems to set up something frenzied and driving, but the payoff is slight and uninvolving. Speed Freaks - City Still a lot of fun, this one. Bright, melodic techno is all too rare these days, and its fleeting appearances never cease to put a smile on my face. City, easily. ![]() From goop we came, to goop we return.

Dialga sounds like Naruke had her period and someone took a tape recorder and filmed it. This is everything that is wrong about her composing style composed into a handy checklist. And with an even more annoying whistle synth!

I wish City had been buried in the prelims by The G Tune. At least that could've given Battle with Dialga a better fight. I don't particularly care for the other Battle with Dialga (brawl) so I wish Sakurai put this version in instead. It'd make a good match with Route 209...

I was expecting great things with "Battle With Dialga" given its pedigree, but was sorely disappointed. Hate the whistle synth, that's what ruined this track for me from the start. When it picks up in pace in gains a bit of melodic momentum, but it still sounds awfully piercing and awkward.
![]() And here's a nice, fresh glass of water to splash over myself after that sweaty, annoying jog. 8-) I'm still a huge fan of "City" and its loose, bubbly approach to crafting a rather melodious piece of electronica race-track goodness. Love the melodies, adore the rhythms and am mesmerised by the track's fluidity. A+ "Battle With Dialga" - 3/10 "City" - 10/10 |

Battle with Dialga really isn't that horrible, but it's not the best PMD track that I've heard. Oh, and whistle synth isn't bullshit as I've read. I mean, seriously. The same people I remember <3ing Wild Arms tracks bitching about a whistle synth now? Hypocracy.
City's decent, but it's not the revelation of dance-pop I expected after the comments here. Melody's more catchy than Dialga, so I guess that gives this the edge. |

Ah look there, the first Pokemon song. Surprisingly enough, it completely sucks ass, ready for the recycle bin. I would delete it right now, but there's still a chance you idiots gonna push this one into the next round, so I have to keep it.
I like City very much, definitely something I'd like to be played at my funeral. I hope this track will win this pairing! ![]() Shushkevich sued the Belarusian Ministry of Labor and Social Security: due to inflation, his retirement pension as a former head of state was the equivalent of one dollar and 80 cents monthly. |

Battle with Dialga: I didn't find this one too bad. It's got some interesting instrumentation choices. Sure, the whistle synth isn't the greatest, far from it actually, but I found the overall quality of the piece to be fairly decent.
City: I'm a big fan of electronica. This song is pretty decent too. Definitely a nice nomination and really bubbly in nature. I found myself getting bored with it after a while though. Not sure what it is though. It might grow on me as it advances. I had to flip a coin and "Battle with Dialga" got the vote. |

Dialga is Blaaaaand with the capital B and preferably a few more 'a's as well. The instrumentation was boring and the melody was dull at best.
City is some enjoyable electronica and although I would like it to be more aberrant I appreciate it for what it is. |
: Speed Freaks - City : Pokémon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Darkness / Time - Battle With DialgaBoth PMD tracks from last year completely trounce Battle With Dialga (especially Magma Cavern and its huge bass you guys suck). Actually, the intro is really good, but then it just implodes when the main melody starts. City is fun, catchy, and while not bound for any awards for outstanding musical achievement is certainly more enjoyable than that other thing. |
|
City is one of my favorite new discoveries from the prelims, so it's going to be tough to beat.
And wow, Battle With Dialga was extremely close to beating it. The intro catches itself before it falls into that infamous progression used by every piece of VGM ever made, and manages to keep itself interesting to listen to, until the melody comes around at 0:46, which almost destroys the entire tune. Very very close matchup. |
|
As with a few others, I've been pleasantly surprised with the recent Pokemon nominations on GFF: they're surprisingly good. The Pokemon track in this match-up continues to be another track from the series that's pretty solid. While "City" is certainly a track that caught my fancy in the prelims, it's difficult to deny the charm of "Battle with Dialga" despite some flaws.
I think therefore I am... I think.

Battle With Dialga, committing no offense against me, is a pleasant surprise but not a keeper. I am a firm City supporter, until something as equally driving and head-bobbing is worthy enough to challenge it.

I quite liked Battle With Dialga, it was nice. But that was it, nice. Nothing striking or anything and I'll probably forget it, but as I was listening I enjoyed it.
City from Speed Freaks... Damn, what a blast from the past. I had so many good memories with that game, and City sent them rushing back accompanied by some awesome electronica. One vote for City, definately. |

'Battle with Dialga' - This song wasn't all that interesting. It sounds more like overworld music than battle music. I like the beat a lot. The song itself is not offensive in any way, but it has absolutely no swagger whatsoever. Also, the damned whistle synth needs to die when it's used like this.
'City' - More god-damned techno, this time with a 'party boy' beat. Whoop-dee-doo. This doesn't have any melody to speak of and it doesn't strike as being a song in any way. I never thought I'd vote for a Pokemon song over anything, but this barf-inducing dance club s**t needs to be stopped.

City isn't techno anyway, it's a horrible little gay disco tune and despite the Pokemon tune being monumentally dull and obvious, it's still better than the camp dance music. ![]() |
