My vote went to the most creative track out of the bunch: Dwelling of Duels - MY FREQUENCY IS 140.85.
Marble heart was not bad, had some nice piano, but they could have stick out more. Rise of the Star - Free Breezin' ~ Theme of Son of Wind: I had to put some [C-Clays] in my player to check whether I'm just sick of metal, and it was good, should have nominated some of their stuff too. Star-Stealing Girl is some nice jazzin'. A close 2nd. Cheers. |

As usual, virt with some amazing stuff. "MY FREQUENCY IS 140.85" is a great Metal Gear medley, and professional quality from well...a professional. This should do well up against any competition.
"Marble Heart", a cool track, but no dynamic contrast and those same beats going on for too long, IMO. Still though, a very cool mix that I was sad to reject from OCR, but I felt could have been more if the melody hadn't felt so close. It does a good job giving the theme a different feel. The drumkit was weak and the basic backing patterns were boring and repetitive in "Free Breezin'", hindering the energy level. Plus, the production on the guitars sucked. The leads sound so far away, with the rhythm guitar actually sounding louder and more in the foreground. IMO, that totally messes up what's otherwise a cool concept. Lucky this didn't get submitted, I would have cut down those flaws pretty hard, especially because the potential here was too good. Darangen's put out some real gold since then, including "Warriors of Light", also in this bracket. "Star-Stealing Girl", not quite feeling the vocalist here, though it could be more how her voice was produced, as it sounded too pasted on top. Good soloing here, and of course a nice laid back vibe. OUS's production has become more refined since this came out, as the balance sounded off somehow here. If everything had been clicking on all cylinders, it would have had my vote, but virt's the man. Ciao.

: 179 - VGMix - Marble Heart : 163 - Dwelling of Duels - MY FREQUENCY IS 140.85 : 193 - Rise of the Star - Free Breezin' ~ Theme of Son of Wind : 204 - Time and Space Vol.2 - Star-Stealing GirlStar-Stealing Girl is nice, and I love The OneUps, but there's one element of the track that absolutely kills it, and I'm sad to say that it's the vocals. They just don't sound like they belong at all. Free Breezin' ~ Theme of Son of Wind is definitely a weak Darangen track, but I can't hate on in too much because the source is Kirby. My favorite part is actually the first 26 seconds, introducing the rhythm riff before the melody comes in. Decent rock, but the execution holds it back. MY FREQUENCY IS 140.85 is classic virt. Really good nominations from him in the contest, although to be fair you can't really go wrong with anything. A couple of transitions I wasn't feeling, but the whole is nice. Marble Heart is really good. A bit rough on the production as Liontamer mentioned, but I like the build in the composition. Definitely an interesting take on a classic tune. Cheers. |

163 - Dwelling of Duels - MY FREQUENCY IS 140.85
An amazing, epic track from Virt. As usual, everything is polished and comes off sounding really slick. Loved the energy of the track, and how he chose to end it. 179 - VGMix - Marble Heart Really digging this mix. Love the use of the vocal sample to enhance the overall dark (maybe even a little sad) tone of the melody. Great, memorable composition here that grabs your attention and is good for repeat listens. Unless this was DQ'ed from Ocremix because of the vocal sample, I have to wonder what they were thinking when they rejected this. 193 - Rise of the Star - Free Breezin' ~ Theme of Son of Wind This just feels a bit washed out, and a bit bland. The source material is so bright and playful, yet the guitar and drums sound so laid back. 204 - Time and Space Vol.2 - Star-Stealing Girl A top notch effort that transforms the track into a laid back jazz track (complete with vocalization). I would have to agree with the others in saying that the vocalization could have been substituted with another instrument for better effect. Ciao. |

163 MY FREQUENCY IS 140.85
I'm not particularly familiar with the source tunes, but this was a pretty good mix that incorporated some good spy-style and militaristic elements. 179 Marble Heart Like the music, hate the vocal samples. 193 Free Breezin' ~ Theme of Son of Wind Decent, I suppose, but kind of boring. 204 Star-Stealing Girl Some high praise for this one above, and it's one of my favorite songs to boot. Maybe that set my expectations a little high, but I was kind of disappointed. The vocals were quite nice, but the whole atmosphere was laid-back to the point of bring kind of dull. A vote for Frequency. Cheers.
