GFF MegaScrabble Sign-Ups

Game starts Wednesday at noon.

Attention bibliophiles! GFF MegaScrabble is here, and this is the obligatory sign-up thread. I’m looking for 10 players (well, 9 and myself), and once we get enough people, I’ll start the game thread in Laughs & Games. Here’s how it’s going to work:

Basics
-The MegaScrabble game board, which is 41x41 squares
-10 Players
-750 tiles

How it works
-Standard Scrabble rules and scoring, except for the modifications below.
-Players start with 14 tiles, and may make 2 moves per day with those tiles (new tiles are only drawn at the beginning of each day)
-50 point bonus for using all 14 tiles in one day
-Word multipliers are added together (i.e., if your word covers 2 Double Word Score tiles, then your score is x4)
-Everyone’s current letters will be shown in the first post (since I’m playing too, and I’ll already know this info, it’s only fair I post it for everyone)
-We play until all tiles are exhausted. Whenever someone has used up all of their tiles and none are left to draw, the game ends at the end of that day. No points will be awarded for the tiles remaining on the other players’ lists.

I’m still working on how I’ll draw tiles. CHz wrote me a nifty program that lets me assign probabilities to each letter, but when I tried it today I got lots more Xs and As than I should have. Not sure if it’s user error or a glitch with the programming. If we can’t get the bugs worked out in time, I could always just do it the old fashioned way and draw real tiles out of a bag.

Updating the game board
The file is located on Google Docs. I will grant permission for all players to edit the file, which can be done in real time, so there's no confusion.

Assuming everyone uses an average of 10 tiles per day, I estimate the game will last a week or so. I don’t think I’ll have much trouble attracting 10 players, and if the game goes smoothly, I’m sure there will be more in the future.

Players:
1. nuttyturnip
2. Yeldarb
3. Smelnick
4. Tritoch
5. Domino
6. Summonmaster
7. RockgamerXIII
8. Zergrinch
9. Grawl
10. Guru

I'd take 750 numbers and assign each of them a letter. If there are supposed to be 25 A's, have 25 A's in there, etc, then just use random.org to draw tiles.

True enough, but that would mean I'd have to make a 750 item long chart that I'd have to refer to for each letter I drew. It'd be easier just to do it the old fashioned way.

I would like to partake in the festivities and hope my hardest that I don't get stuck with X, Y, or Z.

Looks like we just need 3 more people. If we get enough overnight, maybe we can get started tomorrow. There's still a few things I need to do, but as long as I'm not busy tomorrow (and who am I kidding, I won't be), I think I can have everything ready to go by tomorrow afternoon.

I'd like to have days start at noon my time, since most of the work on my end will be done at the beginning of each day. Even though I don't have much to do at work, the little I do have happens first thing in the morning.

Also, sup Risk crew.

One question though.

What is to stop someone from using a dictionary?

Every game I design sounds complicated, because I tend to go overboard explaining things. This should be much simpler than Risk; the only complicated part is ensuring players don't trip over themselves updating the chart.

As far as dictionary use goes, there's no way to stop that. It doesn't bother me overly much, since the drawback to using a dictionary in regular Scrabble is the other players have to wait while you look up all sorts of possible combinations in the dictionary.

Why don't we just have some kind of proper turn order, determined by (oh I don't know), random numbers and stuff?

As much as it pains me to waste yet another occasion to show Zergrinch who is the ruler of word games here, I can't participate. I'll be away for eleven days starting tomorrow.

However! Be sure to sign me up for any game starting after August 11th. I like Scrabble.

Face, you know as well as I do that zzzeroparticle is the ruler of word games here!

Anyhow, I recommend we do this via Google spreadsheets instead of bouncing this back and forth the hard way.

Sweet! Google has everything.

I could see you changing the file in real time, but I couldn't make any changes myself. I'm unclear on how Google docs works, but it looks like the perfect solution.

As for assigning turns, I don't see how that could work. Many of us are only online at certain times a day, and it would suck to have to wait for someone else to take their turn before you could take yours.

the way it works is the owner invites collaborators to get edit rights. Since I uploaded that particular file, I am the 'owner'. To give you collaboration rights, I need your e-mail address.

Ah...

So I have to input people's email addresses, as opposed to simply giving them the password to the account. Guess I'll upload later (after my meeting) and start collecting emails.
