Regional designations are arbitrary. I know for example someone from Washington state is not necessary within vicinity of SoCal, but I don't want to subdivide too far.

Also, regional separation may put two close areas as distinctly different, such as New Orleans and Houston, which are South and Southwest respectively, even though they are not that far from one another.

It's up to your discretion on what constitutes "within eachother's reach".
