Help with GIMP

No, not my personal gimp, I'm talking about the image editing software I use.

I'm trying to figure out how to make my sig black and white (remove the yellowish tint) while still keeping the lips red. Is this possible? If it is, how is it done? It's not so much that I'd like somebody to do it for me (though it'd be well appreciated), but moreso that I'd like to know how to do it for future reference.

Also, how do I add a border around the image? I'd also like to add a border around my sig as well. Thanks.

EDIT: OR, how could I add the same color (yellowish tint) to the avatar to match my sig? That might be easier.

The Grayscale option, which he explains to get to as he used it, works well here.

And, just for comparison's sake, I tried it on my own and ended up with this:
