You're pretty much asking why orange kool-aid doesn't taste like orange juice.
Well I can agree maybe to a degree, but orange kool-aid and orange juice both have the taste of ORANGE in it. Coconut milk and the coconut flavor in milkshakes taste completely different.

I grew up on skim and 2% and now I drink whole organic. It's delicious. I've never had soy by itself; only in coffee drinks, but I'd like to try it some time.

For most of my life I only drank 2% because that's what my mom would buy. Now that I am an ADULT and can buy whatever kind of MILK I want, mom, I... well, I still usually end up buying 2%, sure, but only out of habit, not out of any sort of preference.

Like with most things that I put in my mouth, I am not all that picky when it comes to milk. If that's all you've got, then sure. In fact, I had a bowl of Raisin Bran with soy milk this morning and it was the best damn breakfast cereal experience I've had since they starting putting Red Balloons in my Frosted Mini Cookie Combs. Oh, what a magical day of breakfast improvisation that was!

Chocolate and strawberry.

But in view of what's happening in this part of the world, I'm probably going to swear off milk for a while

I always used to drink 2% but since I've been doing a lot of weight "loss" I've bounced over to skim and there really isn't a huge difference to me.

And this is the person who can detect the difference between diet and regular soda. Which I've gotten accustomed to drinking (diet) now.

I'm a trusting person by nature, but you're testing my limits.

Do you associate solely with pack-a-day smokers or what?

Actually no. It's my parents because, when I used to drink straight sugar, she would always buy the diet stuff and I told to her that it doesn't taste the same and she said yes it does.

And to this day she can't tell because I have given her regular some times just to see if she notices. Nope.

Capo, I've run into other non-smokers who don't know the difference between diet and regular; some people just don't taste as strongly as others . . . either that or they do taste the difference but honestly don't give a fuck.

I honestly don't know how people can't tell the difference between regular and diet. Dr Pepper does a good job of confusing the tastebuds, but any other diet I've tried pretty much tastes... diet.

Back to milk, however... About a month ago I bought a 1L carton of whole milk because the store I was at didn't have any 2% left [which we normally buy] and I absolutely loved it. I've taken to buying my own [whole/3.25%] milk now and not only love the taste, but also the fact that nobody else in the house will drink it. They seem to buy 1% now.

Also, since the switch, it seems a lot easier to tell the difference between even 2% and whole. I spent last week in the hospital and they only had 2% and skim, so I settled for the 2%... and well, it just wasn't the same.

I admit I drink diet soda, and that it tastes awful, but the corn syrup in American soda gives me a horrible headache. I have yet to come across a person, smoker or not, who doesn't make a face and make a "bleh" sort of sound when they take a sip of my drink, not realizing it's diet until too late.

I didn't think anyone still drank full-sugar drinks. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't drink diet. Generally diet tastes nicer and the amount of sugar you're taking on board in just a singe can of coke can properly fuck you up.

Then again, there are quite a few fatties posting here so the fact that most of you drink full sugar drinks shouldn't really surprise me that much.

Not just the fatties. Some of us that fall into that 150 lb, 5'10" or 11" range drink non-diet. I mean, seriously. My non-juice drinks better have extra sugar in there.

Juices, though? Those need to be no sugar added. You get enough natural sugar from the fruits and stuff for them to taste fine, but ain't nothing natural about a soda. Those need extra sugar. Can be cane, can be corn syrup, but it needs to be toothrotteningly good.

I've heard Mexican Coke is actually still sugar and not corn syrup. I'm a diet drinker, though, so it doesn't matter a whole lot to me. Non-diet sodas always leave me feeling very full and bloated, pretty much the opposite of what I want while eating dinner or a late-night drink.
