Request: After listening to this week's selection, I realized that I had chosen the shorter version of the track I intended to nominate, probably because I was hurried to nominate in time. The album strangely has several versions, identical apart from length, of the same track. Is it possible to replace the track (#02) I currently nominated by accident with the track (#21) I actually intended to nominate? The only difference is that #21 loops twice.

If the answer is yes, #21 is already uploaded to the FTP. Thanks.

beatmania -
Pretty good ambient piece, which is strange being said about a beatmania track, though I'm unfamiliar with the exact game it's from.

DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House
A little bit fruity for my usual tastes. The concept is good, but I can't help but think the mixer could've used better synths.

Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim
I love this track. My only gripe is there isn't enough!

Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light
This song put me right into the seat of a Vegas stage act, for some reason. Very typical sounds, but it's done well. Fun and easy to listen to.

That's absolutely acceptable. I've switched the tracks, so if you've downloaded the short version (track length 2:42), make sure to grab the extended version to see if you like it more or less. They're pretty similar; the long version loops the first half of the track and has a longer ending.

Also just a reminder that we're back to single-week voting, so don't put off voting and nominating and such.

Thanks for taking care of the threadmaking this week, CHz! I'm on crappy hotel dialup, and it's the first 'net access I've had in two days. It may also be the last access for days to come, so I'll brave the monstrous load times and vote now.

beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES
I'm afraid songs like this just all sound the same to me. There's n real hook to set it apart from the pack.

DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House
A pretty standard tune, it's spiced up with some hilarious samples. Normally I don't like this sort of thing, but the barking dogs, burps, whistles and screams had me laughing, and the song actually felt kind of empty when they went away.

eXceed 2nd -VAMPIRE REX- (Game Rip) - Welcome to Vahalla
Not a whole lot of meat on this one at first, though it eventually opens up and gets more varied. Once things get moving, it's pretty good.

Namco Game Sound Express VOL.16 Attack of the Zolgear - Exia Metropolis
Some pretty dull parts, but when it's good, it's quite good.

Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim
This piano-techno fusion hit a lot of the right notes for me. I really like the repeating figures that persist throughout the whole song, and the piano part is pure bliss. It even has a rainstick! Top-notch.

Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light
This has a really strong start that it never really follows through on. Instead of ramping up to something special, it takes a much easier and cheesier sub-Iwadare route--very disappointing.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV - Turtles in Time (SNES Game Rip) - Sewer Surfin'
This entire OST is terrific, with lots of high-energy and fun songs that make good use of the SNES sound chip. I chose this song to put up because it doesn't feature the theme from the cartoon series, which might've raised eligibility questions, but it's always been a favorite.

The Granstream Saga Original Sound Track - To Those Who Challenge Fate (Ending A)
I hoped for a bit more from Tanaka, who I've always had a soft spot for. But he doesn't deliver anything super-special, though there are some nice flourishes at the beginning.

The Point Spread
Sewer Surfin' - 3 pts.
Spirit of the Jarfignugen - 2 pts.
Welcome to Valhalla - 1 pt.
Music games rock.

Track Title: The Ryousanhaku Suite
Track #: 7
Artist (arranger): Norio Maeda
Composer: Shinji Kinoshita, Kazumasa Mitsui

Comments: A rare arranged track from me. Also my longest nom ever.
Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):

Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?

What else do I listen to?

A perfectly lovely week. I wish I had more points to give out, but I don't want to devalue the strength of the top two selections.

(1 point) beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES

beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES was ultra smooth and slick. All of the little instrumental touches work, and the piece progresses with nice fluidity and elegance. A wonderfully chilling piece of music; I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

Well this DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House song was just plain fun. There wasn't really a strong melody that stuck to me, but everything else is bubbly, infectious and enthusiastic. The numerous sound effects work really well with the synthlead, as well. Yup, very entertaining!

eXceed 2nd -VAMPIRE REX- (Game Rip) - Welcome to Vahalla had me mildly interesting for the first couple of minutes (it was sort of that "in one ear out the other" situation), but then 1:49 happened and really got me hooked. From there until the end I appreciated the overall funkiness much more. <3

Combo breaker~ Yeah, I didn't enjoy Namco Game Sound Express VOL.16 Attack of the Zolgear - Exia Metropolis too much. Sounded a bit too tiny and repetitive to my ears. The lack of a strong melody also hurt this one. Yeah, I don't think I'll be keeping this one.

Yup, sounds like soundTeMP! I've been meaning to check out the fantasy MMORPG music scene, and this Secret of the Solstice (Game Rip) - the spirit of the jotunnheim track just gives me more reason to do so. Gentle, emotional and uplifting in one, this track is a nice, laid back listen. Doesn't wow me (probably because there wasn't a good climax like I was expecting), but it's still great, especially for a 2 minute tune.

Shining Theme Music Shiro SAGISU Collection - Inheritors of the Light was another one of those fleeting tracks. It was nice, upbeat and engaging throughout (I remember some cool trumpets~) but once it ended I was left fairly empty and "uhh what"-like. A nice piece of music (if memory serves), but nothing truly stuck to me.

Holy cow~! This is some really kickin' music, huh? Yeah, this Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV - Turtles in Time (SNES Game Rip) - Sewer Surfin' is a great little tune. Funky, catchy, bouncy--and it's all complimented by an awesome melody. I like this one lots!

Kouhei Tanaka's the man. The Granstream Saga Original Sound Track - To Those Who Challenge Fate (Ending A) has some pretty sweet orchestrations, that's for sure, and the elegant violin really gives the piece a strong voice. The backing strings are also particularly great. Stirring, captivating and appropriately dramatic; just what an ending track should sound like.

man, that POINT you're holding looks pretty cool and rounded~

8th: Namco Game Sound Express VOL.16 Attack of the Zolgear - Exia Metropolis

Very cool week, a six-point-spread was the only way to go about it. Only a couple I could do without, the rest have earned a nice spot on my hard drive~~

So close, sorry: Sewer Surfin'; Exia Metropolis

This was a really solid week. I could've split the points more, I'm sure, but the three I chose were definitely the most interesting for me. The others were definitely good, just not quite so captivatingly.

2 points: DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House

I would have liked to give an extra point to Ending A, but I've actually seen the ending.

beatmania HIROSHI WATANABE beat indication - DEEP CLEAR EYES
Smooth drum and bass + new age that I definitely enjoyed. Not so elaborated melody-wise, but the mood is good enough to excuse this.

DJMax Portable Legacy - Light House
Hyperactive for sure! There are some nice parts, and overall it's good for its style, but ultimately, it didn't have much impact on me.

eXceed 2nd -VAMPIRE REX- (Game Rip) - Welcome to Vahalla
Was a bit generic in the beginning, which almost made me loose faith in it, but then the synth lines got awesome and they won me over. Kind of a modern sounding retro-ish piece.

Namco Game Sound Express VOL.16 Attack of the Zolgear - Exia Metropolis
