I just updated the second place track from Week 123, Maruan Series 1: Umihara Kawase Shun ~Second Edition~ (Game Rip) - BGM 3, with the appropriate track from the OST. There's no particular difference in sound quality, but this has an actual track name and specific composer, which is always nice.

There was a ton of variety this week, that's for sure. Something for everyone.

3 Points: Racing Lagoon Original Sound Track - Ending
1 Point: Fantastic Four (PSX Redbook Audio) - Large Wars
1 Point: Super Mega Drive Fan - Mega Drive Super Music Collection Vol.2 - DARK SHADOW [Alshark]
1 Point: Capcom Game Music - Demon Boundary Village ~ Maikamura Arrange Version

Though that's the top half of this week's picks for me, the bottom half was incredibly close behind. I had to stop and seriously think about which track would receive the last point. They're all worthy in their own ways. Good job, folks.

And a new nomination!

Game: Music Catch
Track Title: Before Dawn
Composer: Isaac Shepard
Track Number: 1
Year: 2008
Source: http://www.isaacshepard.com/
Additional Notes: Isaac Shepard is a composer for Reflexive Entertainment, maker of downloadable games. This track is the in-game music for "Music Catch," one of their titles. The track also exists on "Swept Away," one of Shepard's independently released solo albums, which is where this was obtained. Shepard chose to feature his existing work in "Music Catch" rather than write a new piece. However, they're identical and this track's exposure is due to it being VGM more than anything else, which is why I feel it certainly qualifies for SotW.

Very fucking hard to pick from this week's choices, cuz they're all good.

Capcom Game Music - Demon Boundary Village ~ Maikamura Arrange Version
My nominee. Told like a good story. Good buildup, suspense, climax, etc. Just exciting to listen to.

Derby Stallion Original Soundtrack - Stable
You know, I wish they'd put music like this in movies, shows, and games OTHER than ones to do with horses and the Wild West, so that way there wouldn't be such a stereotype applied for LIKING it. Jeeze.

Metal Slug ~Complete Sound BOX~ - The scene of a hard battle (Boss 1)
High quality music from SNK games isn't common, but Metal Slug is a good game series, so I'm sure they saved the best for it. Very good track.

New Ghostbusters II (Game Rip) - River of Slime (Level 4)
Sounded too 80's for me. I can imagine it being arranged and done very well with a variety of instruments, but don't think it would actually turn out.

Super Mega Drive Fan - Mega Drive Super Music Collection Vol.2 - DARK SHADOW [Alshark]
Reminds me VERY MUCH of Terranigma.

(2 points) Capcom Game Music - Demon Boundary Village ~ Maikamura Arrange Version
(1 point) Racing Lagoon Original Sound Track - Ending
(1 point) Metal Slug ~Complete Sound BOX~ - The scene of a hard battle (Boss 1)
(1 point) Derby Stallion Original Soundtrack - Stable
(1 point) Super Mega Drive Fan - Mega Drive Super Music Collection Vol.2 - DARK SHADOW [Alshark]

Easily the track with most character and expression in this matchup is the River Of Slime. A groovin' little chiptune (what is this, GBA?), especially the bit with the triangle lead really appeals to me.

Most of the other tracks are a bit meh to me, so the other votes are a bit on the random side. One night in has a nice groove and cool bass parts but lacks in the lead department, Demon Boundary Village is a not particularly good arrangement of a fantastic song, and Stable is a fun but somewhat vapid country song.

3 points - New Ghostbusters II (Game Rip) - River of Slime (Level 4)
1 point - The Candystore's Manager James Test Version (Game Rip) - One night in... (Stage 1)
1 point - Capcom Game Music - Demon Boundary Village ~ Maikamura Arrange Version
1 point - Derby Stallion Original Soundtrack - Stable

Capcom Game Music - Demon Boundary Village ~ Maikamura Arrange Version I like the jaunty piano here; it's got a very neat old-timey saloon feel. The synth rhythm isn't nearly as nice, but at least it's unobtrusive.

Derby Stallion Original Soundtrack - Stable This one also has an old-timey feel, with more of a down-home country feel to it and a very pronounced fiddle. It's charming, but missing the real hooks that would move it beyond being a just a good genre entrant.

Fantastic Four (PSX Redbook Audio) - Large Wars With a game like that and a name like that, saxophone jazz was absolutely the last thing I expected. The sax has some nice chops in a circa 1985 way, but the electronics pops don't really complement it (they're not cheesy enough or jazzy enough).

Metal Slug ~Complete Sound BOX~ - The scene of a hard battle (Boss 1) Definitely has that whole "boss battle theme" sound about it, but it's clearly a minor boss. Good, but at the same time cast from the same mold as a bevy of other smallboss songs.

New Ghostbusters II (Game Rip) - River of Slime (Level 4) An interesting chiptune that's got rhythmic moxie but comes up short in other areas. The best part is the beginning of the loop, where that famous circus music is quoted.

Racing Lagoon Original Sound Track - Ending Not your average racing track; it's a lot more florid, mixing in a more acoustic sound and relatively strong melody with a lessened selection of backbeats. Refreshing as a change of pace, and it improves with age.

Super Mega Drive Fan - Mega Drive Super Music Collection Vol.2 - DARK SHADOW [Alshark] Love the melody in this one. The samples could be a bit better, but it's still quite enjoyable on a lot of levels.

The Candystore's Manager James Test Version (Game Rip) - One night in... (Stage 1) I thought this was a joke nomination at first, but lo and behold if it isn't serious. Some neat rhythmic and melodic twists here and there.

A very solid week, consistent in quality and with a very diverse selection!

The Point Spread
Super Mega Drive Fan - 3 pts.
Racing Lagoon - 2 pts.
Demon Boundary Village - 1 pt.
I got more moves than a U-Haul.

Decent quality this week. Not much seperating the 1-pointer from others.

The songs were interesting this week, but I have to say I found one of them to be more fantastic than the others.

(3 points) Fantastic Four (PSX Redbook Audio) - Large Wars
(2 points) Metal Slug ~Complete Sound BOX~ - The scene of a hard battle (Boss 1)
(1 point) Super Mega Drive Fan - Mega Drive Super Music Collection Vol.2 - DARK SHADOW [Alshark]

Capcom Game Music - Demon Boundary Village ~ Maikamura Arrange Version was solid. The piano lines were nice, and the backing tempo helps the track sound energetic and hectic. I feel it wanders a bit aimlessly at points, but other than that it's good.

Derby Stallion Original Soundtrack - Stable has some wonderful instrumentation and a distinctive farmland charm, and sounds fairly structured, but the lack of melody really hurts the end product. Good as background music for a farm or hoedown centre, but not too great as a standalone piece.

Finally, a track with some direction! Fantastic Four (PSX Redbook Audio) - Large Wars was slick, catchy and really fun~! The sax work is great, and the developments and solos are awesome. Yup, definitely a keeper.

Whoa, how boring is the first minute of Metal Slug ~Complete Sound BOX~ - The scene of a hard battle (Boss 1)?! ;__; Thankfully it picks up a bit from there and engaged me somewhat. But still, nothing really grabbed me. A solid-sounding tune for the most-part, but -subjectively- I don't care for it too much.

I smiled as soon as I heard the creepy little ditty at the start of New Ghostbusters II (Game Rip) - River of Slime (Level 4). Too cool (sounds like that traditional circus music!). Things stay interesting from there; that's good enough for me! *saves*

Eguchi can be really good sometimes. Racing Lagoon Original Sound Track - Ending is one of those pieces I'd classify as really good. Stirring, with some great orchestrations and a solid, soaring melody; it's a pretty standard ending theme in terms of sound, but it does enough things right to rise above the crowd. Also the sitar automatically gives this track at least 1 point.

Super Mega Drive Fan - Mega Drive Super Music Collection Vol.2 - DARK SHADOW [Alshark] was pretty meh. I thought things would pick up at 1:30 when the sax/whatever got involved because that sounded pretty cool. But it didn't really help after all, a bit too passive in terms of execution and melody. =/ Yup, very meh.

The Candystore's Manager James Test Version (Game Rip) - One night in... (Stage 1) was bad, I didn't enjoy this one whatsoever. One of the few SotW songs I've outright disliked. =.=" Sorry to the nominator, but I just couldn't find/hear anything good in this track. Even the bass wasn't good (it was cool at the start but got insanely repetitive)!

38% POINT, 62% lol

3 points: Fantastic Four (PSX Redbook Audio) - Large Wars
2 points: New Ghostbusters II (Game Rip) - River of Slime (Level 4)
1 point: Racing Lagoon Original Sound Track - Ending
4th: Capcom Game Music - Demon Boundary Village ~ Maikamura Arrange Version
5th: Metal Slug ~Complete Sound BOX~ - The scene of a hard battle (Boss 1)
6th: Derby Stallion Original Soundtrack - Stable
7th: Super Mega Drive Fan - Mega Drive Super Music Collection Vol.2 - DARK SHADOW [Alshark]
8th: The Candystore's Manager James Test Version (Game Rip) - One night in... (Stage 1)

This week was pretty topsy-turvy. Most of the tracks sounded good, but didn't really hook me in. =/

Game: Music Catch
Track Title: Before Dawn
Composer: Isaac Shepard
Track Number: 1
Year: 2008

Music Catch is a Flash game released in May of this year; the BGM track it uses was released on a 2005 album by the composer and so obviously wasn't written for the game. Is anyone else okay with the logic that, because the track is better known from the game it was used in rather than the original album it comes from, it should count for VGM? I'm not really buying it.

Incidentally, the guy has two PC game soundtracks and two Flash game soundtracks (the Flash games having one song each) under his belt, so the argument that he is a VGM composer and such his original works are fine might be applicable (hi zts).

Yeah, I didn't even think that was really an argument worth making since the guy has a few game soundtracks. As long as we're allowed random stuff downloaded from game composer's websites, this is fair game. Eemho!
