THE RiPPERS' STASH (Game Rips Directory Ideas)

EDIT: The focus of newer posts in this thread is currently that of cubed's site "THE RiPPER'S STASH". What begins here is discussion I initiated that eventually let to the current state.

Okay, I've been meaning to create this thread for a while, but I'm prone to procrastinate. cubed used to have a nice index of game rips available, but his site is down now. He's in the process of building a new one, but I don't know how long that will take. God knows I take forever to do anything of that size.

So what I'm proposing is something to hold us over until then. I want to make a directory of game rips, and I'd like to actually include the "games that need to be ripped" in with this project. I'm talking about an actual website as opposed to a GFF thread, because the list won't do us any good when the boards have crashed. Maybe we'll use a little coding, maybe not. I don't plan to make it nearly as robust as cubed's site was, but I at least want to make the information easily available to people.

So help me brainstorm. I have the webspace, all I need is the input.

Double Post:
I was thinking maybe we can use some pre-made software to take care of this. I think a wiki would be more than needed, so I don't really want to deal with that. If anybody knows of any software that would be perfect for this cause, list it here.

like a GMR Online but for rips only ?

that would be nice... and easier to code LOL so people can post others' rips. Like Reichu's rip. Cause I never got in touch with her actually... so it could be a good way to list them all. just a thought.

On the subject of Reichu, I emailed her about two months back and she sent me her gamerip listing. She never replied to my second email though.

But I'm definitely in favor of the Gamerips Directory though I don't know how to help. I could contact a few rippers that aren't registered here (ie Mike, Juno, brainzelda, etc.)...

Oh, and here's Reichu's list:

/GAMECUBE/
Dairantou Smash Brothers DX (= Super Smash Brothers Melee)
/GAMEBOY/
Donkey Kong
Kirby's Dream Land
Kirby's Dream Land 2
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
Wario Land II
/GENESIS/
Ecco: Songs of Time
Ecco the Dolphin
Sonic Spinball
/NES/

I would like to know if people will be more interested in a GMR-like website... I hope we'll get more replies soon... cause I'm willing to make more effort on this one instead. I already have a lot of coding already done anyway.

A GMR-like website would be fine. However, one problem I have with that site is that it has no auditing, so it's prone to vandalism wiping out data permanently. If we could keep some sort of data history, that would be great.

That sounds like a great idea. It would be very useful to have something like this again, and even on a larger scale this time. Though, as Kaleb noted, some precautions might be necessary, auto-backups or something.

I'd be up for the idea, though I have no idea about the coding.

What format is it in? And...what is GMR?

GMR would be the abbreviated version of Game Music Revolution. The name belongs to a popular database site that lists a large amount of information on VGM soundtracks (such as tracklistings, artists, etc). With a simple search function, it's one of the most accessible databases around..
Chudah's Corner is similar, if you've ever been there.

I'd also be in favor of a GMR style website for gamerips (with the safety precautions that Kaleb mentioned, of course).
I wouldn't say that I could help with it though, due to my uncomitted nature. Other ideas seem to escape me at the moment, but I'll post stuff later on if I can think of something.

@ Supersonic:

www.gmronline.com - The best video game music album database.

I'm coding in PHP.

Or if anyone else want to try it in asp instead...

---

Backup is not a problem. I can make daily backup.

OR (again, just a thought) only known rippers would get an account, so only them would be able to edit the database since it's our own work and not from companies, so it's not like if we don't know our own stuffs thus we can trust ourselves and not being worried about any vandalism of any kind.

Never coded in PHP before...I'll probably need to learn it soon.

GMR has a lot of stuff, I'm impressed. Though, I don't see an

alphabetical listing it's probably not needed since there's a lot of

stuff. PHP is pretty reliable from what I've seen, so I'd be all for

that.

They have one. Under the textbox and drop-down-lists it says:

or browse by Album Title Catalogue # Release Date

Just click "Album Title".

Also, cubed, PHP is fine.

Kaleb, is mysql ok too ? I'm more used with PHP + MySQL.

So you would need to create the database and tell me what are the infos to get connected to it.

I can stard to work on it as soon as I get more info about it Not having a girlfriend anymore is helping me too. More free time for me.

EDIT: well, huh I just realized that I can create the databse myself in php anyway LOL

I meant I can create a database on a mysql server with a script in php.

mysql_query("create database db_blabla");

@ Kaleb: I need is an username and password to connect to the mysql server via PHP

Double Post:
is it better to let certain people to have privilege to modify the database or make it simple like GMR ?
