I cant wait for this. I remember tinkering around with the idea in my head a couple years back to make some sort web application that utilized GMR's database and allowed you to build a collection of your albums. This is going to rock!

I have an idea...
I don't know if you've thought of this, but it would be cool if members could keep a checklist of the OSTs they own or possess in a ripped format (it wouldn't specify which). I love seeing what I'm missing from my collection, and this would be a cool way of seeing what I need to track down.

Also, if the database supports categories (example: Mario Series Soundtracks, Final Fantasy Soundtracks, etc), there could be a way that the user can see what soundtracks they need in the category of music they like the most. Of course, categories would be dynamic, so soundtracks could belong to multiple categories.

In any case, that is my two cents. If I think of any other cool features you could consider implementing, I'll be sure to tell you!

I'm looking forward to this

Such a feature will be available upon launch.

While there is no specific feature that allows to view a list of all releases belonging to to a certain series, I think the desired result can almost always be achieved by simply running a database search for the name of the series in question.

This is not so, though, with the Final Fantasy game series. There are multiple spinoffs (Chocobo games and such, and also opening soundtracks to games that don't mention the game name in the CD title) so sometimes it is rather difficult to make sure you have them all.

I see your point though. I guess it's not really needed for most game soundtracks. However, for such soundtracks for games that take place in the "Mario" universe, it might be difficult trying to find them all by searching 'Mario', since some spinoffs might not have "Mario" in the title, and also some other games may have the name "Mario" in the title. I guess my idea was basically to have an easy way to check what I need for large categories such as that. But, I can see the validity of your statement at the same time.

Well the system will boast quite a robust search, and you can query such things as "albums published by X" or "Music from the game Z" or "Music on system V AND composed by composer Y".

I actually plan to implement this at a later date. Building a category hierarchy of game titles (even if it consists of the most basic information) can be as time consuming as populating the database with game albums, that's why we're putting it off until the system is ready for public submissions.

(We currently have a "related albums" feature which works by fetching albums with matching game titles, and it suffers from the exact problem you mentioned; that games from the same series are not necessarily identifiable by title.)

I don't know whether or not this is feasible, but has any thought been given to making GFA interact with CD ripping software along the lines of the freedb project? A lot of game music albums already exist there in the original Japanese, which isn't much use to someone who doesn't read Japanese. Like me. It would be useful to have access to an alternate, translated version of freedb for game music. The benefits as far as accuracy and consistency from one person's rip to the next are obvious.

I just wonder whether or not something like that would even be possible or worth the extra trouble.

That's already been discussed in the other thread. I'd like to eventually implement this.

Ah, I hadn't gotten to reading through that thread yet when I posted. I'm glad to hear it's a possibility. It seems pretty doable to me. I can see it taking some extra database space and some more queries (and therefore more bandwidth), but I hope it will pan out eventually. Keep up the good work guys. I'm looking forward to the finished product.
