If you won't be gaming, I recommend getting something from M-Audio.

My Audiophile 192 is fabulous.

Anything not creative. I'd list audiophile solutions, but I doubt you'd care. All you need to know is creative and especially their drivers is gay.

Gaming in XP can have issues with some soundcards (especially onboard: realtek) due to the creative fad, hence why creative has a few "practical" uses with the audigy series.
Vista doesn't allow hardware acceleration for games so there shouldn't be a problem regardless what you use.

M-Audio is good, but they're not necessarily the best in sound quality. Better than creative, though.

M-Audios should be fine for gaming, unlike the realtek crap (they like to cause crashes), at least, if you mess with certain settings. If you don't game though, it really doesn't matter what you buy.

If you're an audiophile, you should be more concerned with a DAC/amp than a sound card, and using digital output.
Thank you ever so wise and godly forum-lifers for putting a disgusting fatso image in my sig. Or... not.
