internet providers?

before i start, this question is only directed at UK mmbers only, saves alot of time,

which intenet providers are the best?

it's mostly downloading that i would be using it for(only worthwhile thing to do on the internet)

the minimum specs:
-an unlimited download limit
-speed over 2mb p/s at least
- and relatively cheap

an thats about it, i've heard NTL are quite good, and BT are expensive but secure and that's about it

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Swithcing from wanadoo (now Orange) over to Be shortly <3

Wanadoo/orange has been perfect in the 1year+ service, but on standard ADSL at the distance I'm at (2.3km) the best I can get is 1Mb. ADSL2+ will get more like 10mbit+, which sounds very hot. Plus, I hear the 1,3Mb upload speed isn't affected as much by distance / attenuation, as it uses different frequencies less prone to interference.

Also, we're on the 2Gb monthly limit package, but consistently each month we've all used at least 20Gb+. Haven't heard a word from them :3

I have a friend on NTL's 10Mbit / 512k cable service, but due to NTL's high contention ratio (250:1 I beleive) she rarely gets anything higher than 6/7mb.

I'm in the process of setting myself up with Tiscali, as I have similar requirements that you are after.

As for other ISP's, BT are realiable, but damn exspensive, and as for AOL, well..... let's not go there.
I used to be on Supanet, but I found that to be very unreliable.
I've heard that Wanadoo (Orange) are quite good as well.

Tiscali is probably your best bet.

Tiscali's speeds suck, and they only claim to be unlimted. In reality, if you so much as think about the internet during "peak hours" they will send you a nasty email, and once that process has been repeated 3 times, they will cut your already poor speeds in half.

Peak hours are 6pm -> 11pm weeknights, and 12pm -> 4pm weekends. Tiscali suck. I'm with Tiscali.

bloody brilliant, is there any that are just reliable with a reasonably fast download speed?

i found virgin internet to have a good offer for broadband, if there's any virgin user's here, any posts on how reliable it is would be brilliant,
here's the virgin 8 meg offer: http://www.virgin.net/internetaccess/broadband/planone/
