High CPU Usage

It just started the other day. My computer appears to be using 80+% of its CPU power, even though I don't sense any slowdown at all. I'm only running my normal programs - Winamp, DC++, MSN, AVG, and Firefox. I did a full virus scan and nothing was found.

take capture for task manager for all programs when first start your window xp with WinXP Manager (Process Manager).

A few of those programs listed in your hijack log could be hogging the CPU.. Microsofts technet has a utility called Process Explorer that can help find what is using CPU cycles.. get it from
Process Explorer v11.04

Good luck. If you aren't noticing system slowdown then the process is most likely running itself at a low priority level, and releases resources when normal programs request them.

Copy. Paste. Delate. This will inform you whether or not something is malicious. Can't vouch for how it deals with Vista components, but it will point out any obvious threats.

A very common culprit of high CPU usage on XP is Microsoft's File Indexing Service (which you have to manually turn off for all drives). Probably not useful advice for Vista

This is normal for Vista and it actually is because of background indexing. You actually want to leave this on in Vista as it does greatly improve OS disk access as the indexing service in Vista extends to a whole lot more than just desktop searching. I wouldn't worry about it if you aren't noticing any slowdown as its doing what it was designed to do. A new PC with Vista will do this a lot more at the start, and you will also see this kind of activity whenever you make major changes to the hard drive file structure by say installing and/or delating a few large programs.


It was a terrible decision on Microsoft's part for laptops though. Nothing drains a battery faster than constantly high CPU and disk activity.
