Can I play downloaded xbox 360 games on a xbox?

I would like to know because I see alot of iso's of 360 games on torrent sites, and I can save a few bucks downloading them instead of buying them.

Can I play the single player version? If I want online, then I will buy the game.
Any special things I need to do before I play these downloaded games?
