Great ripping method for Xvid/Divx

Hi there,

I have been thinking lately about ripping some DVD's to Xvid/Divx file, but I have no single clues which is the best program out there who can do the job for me, so I need help from you guys (you guys are pro with everything here :P).

If there is any guides how I should do step by step.

Could someone of you give me the link?

Cheers!

meGUI is my program of choice especially when it comes to ripping DVDs into h.264 files. It allows me to mix together various audio streams and subtitles into an mkv package, something you can't do with the ordinary AVI containers...

If you just want XVid/DivX, it may be too fancy (and complicated for your needs), so you can go with RYU's recommendation. But just giving you a heads up to my choice.

Cheers!

PS: thanks for the link Ryu!

Alright, let us keep it simple!

The link has a lot of tutorials. Just click on the underlined meGUI link in my post above.

h.264 is another video codec (a compressor/decompressor) like XVid/DivX. It can compress better than XVid/DivX, so you get more quality for the same file size. The bad side of this is that you need a fast computer to be able to play the h.264 videos, or else it may choke or stutter.

Basically meGUI can mix things together into a file container called "Matroska Video" or MKV format. You can rip subtitles and extra audio tracks from the DVD, and put them together using meGUI. When you look at the movie, you can then choose whether to show the subtitles or not, and change languages whenever you want to. AVI can't do any of these.

Here is how MKV will work:

Video stream (can be compressed in XviD/DivX, h.264, or whatever you want) + Audio stream (one or more languages, can be compressed in MP3 or in whatever you want - I usually keep the DVD format of AC3) + any soft subtitles

Put them together in meGUI ==> a nice MKV file comes out.

Sorry for bringing this thread up, but I have a problem according to the audio input when I'm trying to encode the audio from meGUI.

When I clicked on "enqueue" and thereafter start. I get the status "error". Why's that?

I used neroAacenc. exe as audio input.

Help would be great!

Exact error message, plus a description of what exactly you were trying to do (rip from DVD, encode to AVI, what profile?), would be helpful.

Well, I have followed everystep from the link you gave me.

I used "NeroAac.exe" as a "audio input" and the encoder settings is "Nero AAC: *Scratchpad*. I want to encode it to .avi.

Everything seems like it's running smooth except for the audio part.

Great if you could help me out!

NeroAac.exe is the plugin, not the input. Your audio input should be completely different (the demuxed audio part of the dvd, usually in AAC format).

When I do DVD rips, I almost always never re-encode the audio. I leave audio input blank, go to Tools -> Autoencode, then add in the demuxed AAC from there.

How about if you set encoder settings to LAME MP3: MP3-128ABR?

Sorry for the late message! I have been busy for few days.

When I tried to click on Autoencode, I get a message which says "Problem with video input filename: The path is not of a legal form".

What am I supposed to do? First I did click on tools---> D2V Creater and, I checked the box on "Demux All Tracks" thereafter I clicked on browse next d2v Project Output, and then I clicked on "queue" and on the main windows of the MeGui I clicked on the "Queue" tab and start.

Did I do something wrong...?

Yes.

The first step is as you described. In the second step, you go to AviSynth Script creater (CTRL+R) and play around with filters and de-interlacing.

After you save the AVS script (make sure "On Save close and load to be encoded" is checked), the files will be automatically loaded in the main meGUI window.

Since I rip in H.264 to MKV, I remove ALL audio inputs, change encoder settings to an appropriate x264 profile, and go to AutoEncode.

From here you can specify file format, desired file size, and add extras as desired. When I rip from DVD, I select MKV and add in the various audio streams and subtitles. Then it's good to go.

This is wierd... I did follow exactly as you instructed me. When I tried to watch the movie, I get a really wide screen + the picture is messy + no sound at all.

Why's that?

Media player classic. Oh I forgot that I encoded it to .avi instead of .mkv.

Is that the problem with the encoding?

It's a little late in the game but here's two other recommendations for DVD-ripping (in addition to meGUI, which I've also used to good effect):

AutoGK Homepage - THE tool for XviD / DivX conversion
If you're not concerned with controlling every single aspect of your rip but still want to cover the basics with good quality results.

FairUse Wizard - Easy DVD to iPhone, iPod Touch, iPod Classic, AppleTV, Zune, Xbox 360, PS3, Standalone DivX Player, TiVO HD. Encode with DivX, XviD, H.264, VP7 and ffVFW codecs!
Actually working with the interface isn't the most intuitive but this one does allow good visualization of how your rip will turn out and this works well with subtitles.

2nd for Gordian Knot or AutoGK, those were the shit back in the day when rips weren't as prevalent on the internet and it would be easier to rip your own instead of trying to find a download.
