High School of the Dead

Anyone reading this? A fresh shonen manga (with obviously overused fanservices for male reader) tells a story about the Biohazard-esque story: running for survival because all the townspeople have turned into zombie.

Kumoro Takashi and Miyamoto Rei, are students of Fujimi High School in Tokyo, Japan. As the story begins, it is pulled right into the outbreak where Rei is almost bitten by the zombies of her classmates but is saved by Takashi and Hisashi, her boyfriend. They make it to the rooftop of their highschool and witness the growing chaos (students still alive running and bitten by their zombie counterparts, a teacher committing suicide, and smokes burning the entire city). It seems like a movie (Romero's Dead series) or like a game(Resident Evil) as stated by Hisashi and Takashi. While the trio helplessly watch their world crumble, Takashi recalls the last 2 hours before, in his point of view, was the end of everything.

It began when Takashi was skipping class after informing his friend. He goes to the school's roof and laments the loss of Rei in his life after he finds out she is dating Hisashi. While he enjoys the Cherry Blossom fall, he witnesses a strange incident when a zombie policeman appeared at the gate and started causing a ruckus, teachers and the principal arrive to quell the zombie's misbehavior. But with no success as the zombie started the chain reacion that sets this adventure, biting the teachers and spreading a mysterious disease that reanimates a bitten person or dead body into a mindless, flesh eating zombie. Disturbingly, the virus made by the zombies is extremely quick and deadly, as it manages to spread around the school in 2 hours. Without wasting time, Takashi runs to class while the teachers are being eaten alive and demands Rei and Hiashi come with him to the point of slapping Rei because she was too persistent on the matter, he briefs them on the strange situation at the gate. Then the horror befell them; the speaker of the school announces that there is chaos on the grounds, and that students must go with their teachers to the dorms. Right before the announcer himself is eaten alive.

Students start running scared, even beating each other up and leaving most of them on either a critical situation or killing most of them, which helps spread the virus. Rei and Hisashi are then convinced to go with Takashi. They manage to find weapons in the form of a baseball bat, a pole from a mop and Hisashi's skills with karate. En route to the observatory on Hisashi's idea, they are assaulted by a former teacher now a zombie. After a struggle which they attempt to learn how to defeat it, the zombie bites Hisashi's arm. It is this case that Takashi finds the zombie's ultimate weakness: a blow or concuction to the skull or head. He dispatches the zombie and tells Hisashi their weakness. Sparing no time, they defeat any zombie following them to the roof of the Observatory.

Once on the roof, The trio barricaded themselves in the observatory, thinking of a plan to stay there and supplying them with stocks that would probably last them 3 days. But a tragedy befell them, Hisashi finds out that a single bite from the zombies is extremely fatal and contaigous as he starts having trouble breathing and starts spewing blood. He requested Takashi to toss him off the roof once he turns into a zombie. This event would change Rei and Takashi's relationship for the rest of the story. After dying on the floor by Rei's side, Hisashi turned into a zombie and was manhandled by Takashi shortly. Rei berated Takashi for killing Hisashi; feeling that she could've saved the latter from his zombie fate. Takashi, then feeling that he is not needed by her and burdened by guilt over killing Hisashi, loses confidence in himself. He selfishly attempts to jump through the barricade to defeat the swarming scourge of zombies but is begged by Rei to not leave her, saying she was so sorry and begged him to stay with her.
While this story reminds me a lot about Battle Royale and Biohazard, I enjoy the manga very much. The art is excellent and the drama essence is quite nice too. Highly recommended.

Also, it seems the author awares that his manga is being scanlated, he put funny message to the scanlator with funny engrish

Since it's fresh new, I wouldnt expect much discussion, but this manga is quite enjoyable and therefore you gotta give a try.

Woooh, zombies. That's something different that I didn't expect to be in manga.

Haha, well, that's gotta be a first. I'm glad the author has a sense of humor.

Thanks eriol33! I downloaded it all and plan to read from Chapter Four and onwards tonight. If I hadn't read the explanation, then I would have been thoroughly confused at the start, since the kids are already in the middle of the attack before they explained what happened. It's quite a terrifying situation at first, but as soon as the kids started having different weapons (Kendo club, yeah right, she wields the blade too efficiently to just be in the Kendo club ), it took a lot of the terror out, having other survivors you can rely on. I think I'd choose a nail gun as well, or maybe a halberd.

I've been keeping up with this one since it came out, and so far it's been fairly entertaining. It's pretty obvious the mangaka has roots in h stuff (last chapter was extreme in this regard) but thankfully the focus tends to be directed more on the action, rather than boobies (!!).

It'll be interesting to see how this one pans out.

Hmm, because this manga has survival theme, I only could predict everyone will die except the hero and the heroine (Battle Royale, anyone? ). But since the mangaka put drama aspects in this supposedly-horror manga, maybe my prediction will go wrong (sometime mangaka doesnt kill the character because of fans demand). For now, let's just wait and see for the new chapters, coz it's too early for discussion I guess...

I've been following this manga for a while. It was mostly out of curiosity and the stuff I heard about it on 4chan. The story goes at a very nice pace and the characters are actually good instead of being cliches. I only wish that they could come out faster.

I don't want the hero, heroine, the nurse and the senpai to die. They're really likeable characters.

I like this manga a lot right now. It reminds me of "The Walking Dead." Fun stuff, I love zombie-themes.

Zombie invasion stuff is great when it's actually done right, and I enjoyed the six chapters posted. Hirano is by far my favorite character with his "too perfect" background and insane side whenever he's angered. He goes from nerdy and caring to a serious killing machine in an instant.

My favorite part so far has got to be
Spoiler:
when the police are blowing people off of Onbetsu Bridge with high-powered water hoses, and then later it shows those people risen as zombies below the bridge.

Busujima senpai is looking really good in chapter 7 =)

anyway, that was a very risky stunt Takashi pulled with the kid on his back. I can't wait to see them cross the bridge and look for their families.

Chapter 7:
Some good zombie action in this new chapter, though I have to wonder about the effectiveness of that knife-pole used to kill the little girl's father. I'm sorry, but that seems both unwieldy and and weak for stabbing. If they'd removed the blade from a kitchen knife and used that then it'd be fine, but it just looks too awkward for fighting when it's just a knife tied to a stick.

I wonder what their families' reactions will be if Senpai doesn't change clothes before then. You'd think she would have had time to put on something other than her underwear/apron outfit since the nurse got dressed before they left too.

Hehe, just started this and read the first act. This is entertaining.

Zombie invasions for the win. I was a bit thrown off that it puts you right into it already at the beginning, but I'm over that shock now (I think). fan service...

Browsing throught the manga forums to view threads outside of WAKAPPA! Yotsuba and lo and behold, High School of the Dead!

:Life 3:

Really, really enjoyed what's been scanned so far. I was afraid the scans had stopped but they updated about a month ago with a new chapter and an omake chapter.
Spoiler:
The omake chapter retold the intro story from Takagi's perspective, which was cool if not a little rushed. Still enjoyable though.

Meanwhile, the latest chapter had the crew rushing to the hospital for that old lady's transfusion. They're trapped, whatever will they dooooooo~!

Really, really good stuff.

At first I had written off High school of the dead as a typical zombie apocalypse piece but once I got started I found that despite its cliche setting its still quite a good read. Now I think it is a shame this series hasn't gotten more exposure, the writer manages to really make an interesting story out of the whole zombie situation. And the art is also quite... nice. Although considering the background of the artist it is no surprise.
Spoiler:
the omake chapter didn't really thrill me, so far its just a rehash of the escape from highschool chapter and it doesn't really reveal anything new, it just confirms what we've known for some time now.
