Marching band has officially become cool

The Cal Marching Band's Amazing 16-bit Video Game Halftime Show

Yes, I was in marching band in high school. And yes, it was totally rad. Tenor drums in the drumline, baby. Holla.

(Wow. Only ~8 threads in this section of the forums ???)

Michigan State beat them to it by 3 years:

Michigan State University Spartan Spirit Music CD
(See tracks 20-23)

I'll try and upload them when I get home.

This is awesome.

Marching band is cool. I just wish I had time for it when I was in school. I couldn't do any band at all once I entered college.

I didn't know they released those songs on a CD. I do have the Mega Man and Zelda songs on my computer though, as I got them from the guy who wrote the arrangements.

And yeah, marching band was never not cool. >_> Too bad I wasn't good enough to keep doing it in college.

Oh, you know Albie? Very nice. I missed being in the SMB with him by a year or two, but here's the full set in LAME:

SMB_VGM.zip

If that link fails, PM me and I'll send you a link to it in my own webspace. I just don't want to post that link in the general thing because a huge excess of bandwidth would get noticed by the sysadmins here and likely get me shut down, but a few people wouldn't be any issue.

Oh my goodness, that had me rolling. I was in marching band too but we never did anything nearly that fun. It was always serious stuff so that we could make it to state marching competition. You know, I was thinking about it and those Tetris and old school Mario patterns are really smart. They're easy for the students to form because they're essentially just collections of lines (no curves or complex shapes to form), right? But the crowd just recognizes that it's Mario and Tetris. Everyone wins. That's really clever.

that is amazing. Marching bands can be pretty rocking when they want to be, and i was with it all the way.

Up until Mario.

yell at me all you want, i'm just done with Mario. All the time with the Mario music. please people, get over it.

Ohh man, I was in a marching band for one song - our school didn't have anything set up for it unfortunatly, but I was a boner, and we played 76 Trombones for the HS Musical - good times, I wish that they had a marching band, I would've done that too. I was a huge band freak in HS (not so much in college, they didn't have a band there ) but oh yeah, HS band, jazz band, and little ska dealies for student bands :P

This was an awesome video, but I'm not a big fan of sub-college marching bands. I've never seen a high school marching band that was good enough to keep my attention, but the college ones are almost always entertaining.

My brother goes to Cal and he was telling me about his friend who's in marching band and participated in this showing of awesome.

Friend said that it was basically really easy to choreograph and relatively easy to execute except when you fuck up and go the wrong way. It made me laugh because I can just imagine this lone wolf marching off in the wrong direction, oblivious to his folly.

Here's a link to the Kansas marching band performing their video game set back in 2006. The set includes Zelda, Mario and Final Fantasy (mostly VI I think). I think the set included Tina, the regular battle theme, the fanfare and something afterwards that I recognize but can't place.

Here's the link: YouTube - The Kansas State University Marching Band - Video Game Show
