Storing Private Data

I would like to find a program that allows me to store documents that are password protected, or encrypted... something that only can be read by me. Does anyone know anything like this?

Winrar can be password protected, I'm pretty sure that the information in the file can be encrypted too.

I dont want to have to unzip it and rezip it every time I want to edit something. Thanks though.

You could use TrueCrypt for this. But maybe you want stronger (asymmetric) crypto, then you should try something else. But TrueCrypt with AES is already pretty secure...

Wait, what is this asymmetric cryptography Christian magics? Are there implementations of it? Has it been proven to be more safe than TrueCrypt?

PGP (and its GNU implementation, GPG) is an example of asymmetric cryptography. Basically the key used to encode the data is not the same as the key used to decode. Its very secure, but more computationally expensive than symmetric cryptography.

I'm not sure what DeLorean wants to secure, but I would not trust MS to keep anything private. Then again maybe I read /. too much.

The Microsoft Private Folder works great for my purposes (storing data that I don't want family/friends to necessarily see, accounts/passwords, saved messenger conversations, etc.). However, I would love to learn more about these types of programs, so tell me whatever you know... who knows, I may have a use for it.

I wouldn't use it for more then a few megabytes, maybe up to half a gig. But if you want to encrypt like more than 80 gig of data (my standard filesystem size is around 80 gig) you better go with (fast) symmetric crypto. And AES with a keylength of 256bit (the standard crypto TrueCrypt uses) is pretty fast and also secure.
