how to get audio off video files

basically, is there a way to get the audio off a video file, such as a .avi or .mpeg, so that it is in a mp3 file or something like that? and if so, what software allows for such operation? thanks for your help.

VirualDub. Load the video in there and go to File -> Save WAV.

Better use VirtualDubMod, its fileloading functionality is a bit better (supports ogm and matroska)
