Preliminary Battle VI

Listen to the following tracks, and select the one you like best.

Suzaku (PC-98) - Last Battle
Fairlight 2 A Trail of Darkness (ZX Spectrum) - Title Theme
Latest music rips (updated April 11, 2008):

Cold Winter Original Game Music Score - Really cool; dark, full, emotional strings mixed with drums, piano, choir. Kind of like Furious Angels?
Super Off-Road - SNES rock from the Follin bros.

Currently playing: Nothing

Play-Asia - Japanese CDs, game soundtracks, game imports, & more

What else do I listen to?

Suzaku . . . Whee, thanks for giving me the chiptune version of Motoi's ubiquitous BATTLE THEME. Thanks for giving me THE SUCK.

Fairlight's Title Theme is awesome. And piratey. I don't care if the game isn't about pirates at all, it is win in my book.

Going with my nom, of course. As much as I'm a Sakuraba fan, I find this Suzaku track to be bland, and not that enjoyable.

Fairlights' themes are still among my favorite Spectrum tunes ever. I used to wait through the long loading times just to stare and listen to the title screens. =) The sequel's title theme takes the original's and adds a bit of splendor to it.

Here are both title screens if you'd like to compare the two: (Nice art, too!)

I know that chiptunes generally aren't able to deliver a chorus and timpini, but Suzaku (PC-98) - Last Battle is still an exceptionally limp battle theme. More tension is generated when I pull back on a rubber band, and I'm more excited by Sprint commercials.

Fairlight 2 A Trail of Darkness (ZX Spectrum) - Title Theme is far simpler, but also infinitely more satisfying. A cute little tune that does exactly what it sets out to do.

I'm hiking the Trail of Darkness.

I don't think I like either track. The Fairlight 2 title theme sort of meanders, and takes a good 40 seconds to do anything interesting, and Final Battle is the typical "wall of sound" that makes so much of Sakuraba's stuff unbearable.

But if it means bumping the hellishly overrated Sakuraba off the list, the Title Theme is getting my vote. Suck it, fanboys; complicated does not equal good.
Until it arrives...

Neither blew me out of the water, but I liked the depth to Last Battle more. There was a distinctive bass element, whereas Title Theme felt more monotoned.

Both of these songs get repetitive quite fast, but Title Theme is a fun and bouncy repetitive. Last Battle was something I just wanted to finally end.

I don't think Last Battle is as bleh as some people make it sound, but Fairlight is too fun to pass for a vote here.

Last Battle is serious and dark. I find the melody to be weak/not in the forefront, and that there isn't much variation. It's still not bad, but not among my favorite tunes so far.

Title Theme is joyful and light. Very simple and "chippy". While it's not annoying, it doesn't move me too much either. Not bad as well, yet not overwhelming. I'm voting for it.
Why didn't he just...

I found both tracks allright, nothing special, but nothing unbearable. Last Battle does its job fairly well and Title Theme is a bouncy cutey with a slightly more interesting melody.

My vote is Title Theme.

Last Battle sounds a bit like a last battle theme. Some similarities with Shinobi III music here, but also differences. It's OK, though I don't like this messy style too much.

Fairlight.. I'd vote for the name, but this isn't a name contest. At first this sounds a bit simple/childrish. Then it starts to sound like.. medieval something, with extremely colourful dragons? Well medieval > messy so I vote for Title Theme.
I think, Therefore I can doubt my existence.

I don't understand the hate for Last Battle at all; I really like this track.

But Title Theme is pretty catchy, and there's some real interesting parts in here as well. I'm gonna vote for Title Theme, but I would actually like to see Last Battle get some nod of encouragement here =/
