Romanticism

Yo everybody!

A few days ago I got into an interesting conversation with my Modern Europe professor. He gave us the task the writing our idea of the "most romantic blind date" and my date in particular sparked a lot of conversation within the class. I asked a lot of my friends, girls and guys, and got a ton of different responses. I figured it would make a good thread, as well.

He began to explain that the idea of romanticism is an individual concept, and everyone has had this concept shaped by many factors. This includes the media, personal experiences, and upbringing. He went on to say that every person has an idea of their perfect mate, and whether they know it or not, tend to compare potential mates to this perfect idea in their minds.

My question for you GFF is what sort of characteristics does your perfect mate harbor? Do they dress and think the same as you, or are their personas completely opposite to yours? Are they smart and funny, or perhaps quiet and thoughtful? I'm interested in knowing what sort of ideas you folks have in your mind, and also what your idea of the most romantic date would be.

Furthermore, what sort of things do you consider romantic? Some think a walk on the beach under the moonlight is just as romantic as a dinner by the fireplace. However, others feel a night out on the town dancing and drinking is as romantic as an admirer leaving flowers at your desk.

Personally, I find that thinking of your perfect mate helps you discover characteristics about yourself inadvertently.

True, however, that's not its sole definition. I'm talking about how the idea of romanticism affects us today. One reason the romanticism movement began is because people were trying to glorify their past, romanticizing certain events (i.e. French Revolution) so it wouldn't seem like the horrible event that it was.

I'm looking to see how people in today's day and age romanticize over certain aspects of their lives, particularly the opposite sex.

I would certainly hope my future husband doesn't act anything like me. There can only be one of me, personality-wise. I would prefer someone who at least possesses some sense of humor. Intelligence is a must and also, a level of decency as well. That just about rules out everybody in my neighborhood and city.
