Uplink Mode

On a switch, if one port is uplink, what does this mean?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

This website best explains the difference between a standard port and uplink port.

Make sure you understand the difference in network cables since that is very important in getting the uplink port working correctly.

Then why is it that if I have two switches, I can connect the switches using a straight-thru cable and regular ports (and everything works)?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.
