Powweb: $100 a year, 300GB a month. It's damn HARD to find a better deal. It's what I currently use.

http://www.dreamhost.com/shared/comparison.html

What I currently use. $96 a year if you sign up for a 2-year contract, with 20GB disk space and 1TB monthly transfer (which increases by 8GB each week).

If you want a small discount, I can set up a promotion code for you too

I used to be a proud Dreamhost customer, until I didn't have a job. For the price, they give you a lot of space and a lot of bandwidth, it's actually quite remarkable. (A terabyte of bandwidth for ten bucks a month? ZOMG)

You don't have to sign up for a contract to get a decent price. You'll notice that without a contract, there is a setup fee. Simply contact them and ask them if you can bypass the setup fee; there's a good chance they'll say yes (they did so for me, and the person who suggested it to me.)

9.99 a month, 5000MB of space, uhm, I think 125GB of bandwidth - there are more space options too and of course higher price. Damn dreamhost offers so much more though.

Edit: Oh Jaguar updated thier site.. wow I guess offering so much bandwidth at a good price is not a problem for webhosts anymore. I can remember it was just 4 years ago when you had to cough up an arm and a leg to get as much as 15GB of bandwidth and that's not even enough to run a standard fansite.

Anyway - for a domain itself you could either register one with your host, or go to a true registrar like http://godaddy.com .

I clearly stand corrected. How long have Dreamhost been around and what's their uptime like?

There is a Wikipedia article on Dreamhost. Highlight:

As a former employee, I am very well-versed in the inner workings of DreamHost. We were-and still are, I imagine-almost literally rolling in the cash, which is why they're able to sell so much for so cheap. We bought shit like arcade machines, tons of food, big screen televisions, etc. Also about half the staff dropped acid at random intervals throughout the day. Just thought you guys would like to know what goes in behind the scenes! (anonymous posting from User:68.254.181.82 moved from main article)

Dreamhost have been around since 1998 I think. Their uptime is alright for me, as in sites that I visit that I know are hosted by Dreamhost have always been up for me.

The Speed is sometimes an issue I hear. I wouldn't know, as I'm only on a 1mb connection and it always goes at my top speed for me, but researching on a few web-host forums, apparently for some people it's a bit slow sometimes. But for what you pay, you can't go wrong.

With any of the plans you get a domain name. For extra domains you can buy them through the web panel, or just go to enom.com or godaddy.

Dreamhost does experience bouts of downtime. But in most cases it's resolved within half an hour, and there is a nifty system they provide to report and keep track of these situations.

Going to have to look into that more. Powweb has always been rather quick, except for those rare occasions where anything using MySQL would move at a sluggish pace due to someone abusing the set up and them not catching them quick enough.

Sounds about on par with Powweb's uptime, and to admit I'm fairly tempted by the whole package to pick up and move. Only thing stopping me at the moment is the pain in the ass it would be to move the databases of my current site...

On a side question, so the bandwidth increases by 8GB per week? How much is your bandwidth right now then Bigblah, if you don't mind me asking?

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

The disk space increases each week as well. If Blah's bandwidth goes up by 8Gb a week then we're on the same plan =o. The Disk space increase is 130Mb a week.

*shrugs* Disk space was never something I really looked at in a host, as my concern has always been about hitting the bandwidth caps, considering I only use about 240 MB across about 13,000 files and have been able to hit 10 gigs in a day with it. But, it's always nice to know that it's there.

Can anyone who uses Dreamhost provide a link to their page, though, so I can see what the speed is like? If it's not asking too much, of course.

I was speaking idiomatically.

My transfer is currently 1100GB, a growth of 100GB (not a multiple of 8 since I got the plan a few months before they upgraded it).

By the way, GFWiki uses Dreamhost.

The GFWiki seems very slow to me in terms of response time (with a lag when the link is clicked, and then it loads well past that). The download speed itself looks to be pretty damn good, though, from that link Roph.

GFWiki runs on MediaWiki, which isn't exactly the best in terms of efficiency.

Ok, so does anyone have a better site to get a gauge as to what a normal website will load like on the service? I don't want to seem pushy or anything, but I have had some bad experiences with packages that offer this much and then get either their normal or MySQL resources chewed up on account of it.

Serious Business forums are on Blah's hosting.

phpBB

vBulletin

I have a Joomla set up.

That should be enough =o I agree, mediawiki isn't really that fast in general.

By the way Arbok, what speeds did you get when downloading? Out of general interest. I can only get 120kb/s due to my connection only being that fast, but another person I asked reported only around 300kb/s.

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

Yes, the speed results there were much more reassuring, thank you.

I was getting speeds of around 700kb/s and, like I said, was very impressed in that respect.

Would just like to add that typing in promotion code "less97" will get you the entire $97 off, giving you an effective cost of $3.91/month for their cheapest offer.

That is, if you don't wish to make some existing DreamHost customers happy with referrals

I think running bittorrent trackers are somewhat computationally intensive, and may be explicitly disallowed in their Terms of Service.

DreamHost offers you tons of space and bandwidth for a very low price. But the servers housing its mysql databases are not known for their speed. To be honest, there's nothing much you can do about this. Can't have your cake and eat it too.

Does godaddy offer good web hosting along with domain registration?
Does dreamhost addin ads?
Can anyone describe the interface? Is it all user friendly? I'd like to create html pages then upload them like on Windows Server's IIS.
