Computer (OS: Windows XP) not recognising floppy drives

Like the title says, whenever I put in a floppy drive, a message (after a while of my computer doing nothing) appears saying: "Please insert a disk into drive A:". Oh, and to provoke this message I click on the floppy drive icon. Any ideas as to what I should do?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Has your floppy drive worked before? I had that same problem with mine and it turned out to be the connection that was faulty.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

Hmm...I'm pretty sure it has. I'll still leave the question open and leave this possibility as the last considered one.

I've had this happen, and generally the floppy drive has been dead.
You may wish to simply replace it; they are by no means expensive.

I'm wondering if I should even do that...I mean, I never use floppy's anyway, curiosity just got the better of me this time. I'll think about it though, thanks for both of your help.

I was speaking idiomatically.

It's useful in case you need a rescue disk. Then again...computers can run on CD's and thumb drives nowadays...

How ya doing, buddy?
