Athletics
I'm basically making this thread in response to another thread that was made in General Discussion forum discussing how many of us treat video gaming as a full time hobby.
So basically throughout the community do we have any big time athletes out of our entire motley crew. Did you play more sports when you were younger compared to right now? What were some of the sports/activites you've played on a consistant basis? What would you consider your best athletic talent? Care to share any interesting stores based on any of your athletic talents? Even though I've been a big time geek throughout my entire time in high school. I was actually fairly athletic, I played a lot of sports in high school since coming from a small high school there wasn't really much else to do. In High School the majority of the sports I played was hockey, basketball, badminton, soccer, and table tennis. I actually consider basketball and table tennis to be my best sports. I gave up playing hockey as soon as I graduated high school. I wasn't really much of a stellar player. They did have a nickname for me especially in my last two years of minor hockey. The guys on the team use to call me bruiser, I always played on the checking line when it came to us playing tournaments. It was a lot of fun I gave a few good checks, but you have to give it as good as you can take it. I still played a few sports when I went to university but it was mainly for fun and even then the only sports I played throughout my time at university was basketball, badminton, and the friendly yet rough game of football. I also picked up playing ultimate frisbee with the theatre & fine arts students. I've pretty much haven't had much time to do anything athletic these days with work and my social life being so incredibly busy, but I'm hoping this summer to do a bit of cross country mountain biking; my fiance got me involved with downhill skiing and I really enjoy that and from time to time, if the opportunity presents itself I'll play table tennis and basketball as well. I also get a lot of exercise from playing DDR & ITG as well. I'm hoping this summer, I'm going to try swimming, my fiance really wants me to try to get over my fear of water, so we'll have to wait and see what happens. Jam it back in, in the dark.

I've been a soccer player since I was four years old. I pretty much stopped once I got to college, because I wasnt motivated enough to play here. Plus, I wanted to actually remember college as a time I had spare time at points, and being an athlete probably wouldnt have allowed for much of that.
For almost my entire soccer career, I was goalie, and I can remember exactly when the transition from field player to goalie happened. I was on my Spring U12 team, and Coach Levington was having everyone try being in goal while the rest of the team took shots on them. I was TERRIFIED, especially because the very first person in line to take a shot on me was Ryan, the coach's son (which, in my experiences, the coach's kid is always one of the best on the team). This kid had a fucking rocket for a foot. It must have looked pretty pathetic/horrible, but the kid kicked, and it basically went straight towards me. All I did was stick my hands straight out and the ball bounced off them, and rolled away. But the way the coach praised me for it, it gave me such confidence that I kept with it, and became first goalie over the rest of the team. For pretty much the rest of my soccer career, I was in the net. The only exception was on my high school's team, where their goalie was a sophomore when I came in as a freshman, so of course, I never got any time in the net. I was moved to right wing back again. I played softball for a season when my mom got tired of dropping me off at a different park than my sisters. I hated it. As for now... I'm not nearly as athletically active, but every now and then, I pick up a frisbee for a game of ultimate. There's nowhere I can't reach. |
I never played sports as a kid, it never appealed to me, though I wasnt fat, I was weak and slow and the only excercise I got when younger was when I would wrestle with friends in my middleschool years. It would be like a daily thing aftershool, sure it was fake, but it was about endurance and eventually one of us would collapse from stiff hits and drops and silly finishing moves, so it was a fun workout type deal.
Last year I decided to take running seriously cause a friend of mine got me back in to it, I used to run about 2 years ago, but then stopped cause I quit caring, but now its something I really enjoy for various reasons and I do it about 5 days a week. I look forward to doing a marathon, hopefully in a year or something . tl;dr I never played sports when I younger, but now I run This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |
I used to be in Track back in Junior High and High School. I did the long distance stuff like the 1600m and the 800m dash. I wasn't that great in it. I didn't even like it that much. The only reason why I joined was because one of my friends dragged me into it.
I also did Cross Country too for 1 year in High School. It was ok. I liked it a little more than Track, but the Cross Country coach was a dick. I am a dolphin, do you want me on your body? |
When I started secondary school I really got into sports. Before then I only played them in PE. I used to be a crackerjack sprinter so naturally I joined the cross country club... I also started going to hockey and basketball groups. I was quite good at basketball but it was the shittiness of the other's playing that made me seem good in hockey. I was chosen to represent my form in 200 and 100 metre sprints for sports days, occasionally for the long-jump too.
In my first year I was selected to represent the school in a field and track competition, initially for the highjump and the 200m. I didn't find out until I got there that the girl doing the hurdles had decided she didn't want to and made me swap with her, despite the fact that I'd never done it before. I came 2nd and 3rd in the two races I ran, so I don't think I did too badly, all things considered. I also started going to the school's gym at lunchtimes when I was old enough, and I was a very enthusiastic cyclist as well. Then I got hospitalised. Ever since I've come out I've been a lazy fucker. I was speaking idiomatically. |

My liver could compete in the Strongman Competition.
What kind of toxic man-thing is happening now? |
Diss and myself both still play hockey in adult leagues. He's a pussy goal scorer, while I'm a manly defensive specialist. He's a big girl's blouse, too. I also play footy (Attacking mid) and baseball (DH). I play pick up games at the university in basketball, but I suck horribly at anything that's not playing defense/blocking shots.
FELIPE NO John Mayer just asked me, personally, through an assistant, to sing backup on his new CD. |
Never played sports as a kid really. Glad I didn't have the type of parents who push their kids into it. Gym class was the main extent of my athletic endeavors. And I wasn't athletic... at all.
So obviously I'm never very athletic now either. Although I really should start exercising more regularly. I've got a bit of a gut now and it just looks kinda awkward since the whole rest of me is so skinny.... What, you don't want my bikini-clad body? |
I played baseball back when I was 11, I was too much of a pussy to hit the ball so i didn't preform well and never went back in to sports.
Nowadays the only physical activity I participate in is DDR. Jam it back in, in the dark. |
You know, it might be my anti-useless nerd bias, but I actually think less of people who say "My only physical activity is DDR" than I do of people who just say they get no physical exercise.
There's nowhere I can't reach. John Mayer just asked me, personally, through an assistant, to sing backup on his new CD. |
I think when you say it as a way of being proud, like you exercise via DDR, then it's more sad. When you say it as a joke that you do so little physical activity that the few times you play DDR you get a workout, then I think it's alright.
Seriously, which us didn't get tired after playing Track & Field back when we were little? This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it. |

Never did any sports for teams or anything, but in middle and high school I would play a lot of basketball, football, and ultimate frisbee with my friends. Usually after school and stuff.
Now that college is around, I haven't seen much of my friends, but I do play DDR and ITG for a workout, but that usually happens Thursday-Sunday for about 3-4 hours and I at least go three times per week. I occasionally hit the gym with my dad, but there hasn't been a lot of time since we're renovating the house again. :| I was speaking idiomatically. |
I played a good amount of sports from middle school until high school.
4th Grade: Soccer and Basketball 5th-8th Grade: Basketball 9th-12th Grade: Football, Track & Field (sprinter), Wrestling, and Swimming (9th and 10th Grade) Basketball is probably my favorite sport to play, but I wasn't tall enough to make the team in high school. I'm only 5'11" and no one under 6' made the team. I probably wasn't good enough either so I looked to other sports. Nowadays, I'm in college so I'm definitely not on a school team because I lack the skills to play at that level. All I do now is play basketball 3-4 times a week at the gym just doing pick-up games. I'm definitely less active now than in high school since I'm not constantly at practice after school. I'm willing to bet that I'm more physically active than most of the population though.
