2 Quick Questions

Well there are 2 things I need some help with

1: I had my system set up to duel boot xp and vista RC1. I have vista on a sepret hdd then my copy of xp (witch makes it hot swappable) Now I just don't want to deal with it so how do I fix the boot file to eather not list vista and go to xp or just make xp the default boot method?

2:The fan on my psu died so I need to get a new one I have had this computer for a wile so I don't have boxes or remember much about stuff like this. The vid card I have is a msi gforce 6600gt (128mb) and I think the min it needs is a 350W poer suply. I would like to try to save money since because when I build new computer I don't plan on taking the psu and using it. So should I try to find something better then the min or will that run everthing on my pc ok?

Jam it back in, in the dark.

I'm not the smartest person around but I'll do what I can till the better knowledged users come around.

1. Sorry I dont know anything about this one.

2. From what you said 350W is the min, that should be fine unless you plan adding new hardware which will require more than 350W. I'd reccommend a 400W-500W, in case you decided to add more hardware.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

More hardware? well I have 2-3 hdds (1 is connected in a rack and is hopt swappable) and a dvd burner. So dose that count?

Also is the a good deal?

Were those already there when you had the 350W PSU? If so then you'll be fine with the 350W.

That link of yours, it doesn't seem to be working on my side or its not an existing page.

I won't try to guess about your first question, but as to the second, you can take the PSU apart and switch out the fan. Depending on the model, they take your basic 80mm fan that you can find in any computer case. All you'd need is ten bucks and a screwdriver.

I dual boot Vista and XP too, as far as I know you need to do this (I don't have Vista at hand at the moment so I'm not 100% sure):

Goto Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Startup and Recovery -> Change the "Default operating system" dropdown to "Earlier Version of Windows"

That should hopefully do the trick.

I don't nkow off hand what my psu is now, but I think it was a 400-450W I would need to open it up and see.

PS:Sausagebootsis there any way to do that in xp? Vista was bugging me about actavating it and would not let me log in without doing it.

I doubt it but you can try those steps in XP if you want.

Apparently EasyBCD will allow you to modify the Vista boot sector from XP.

Word of warning though, be very careful about what you change, if you screw up the boot sector it can cause major headaches.

You can change the thing you're booting from within WinXP by going: Start -> Run -> msconfig -> boot.ini tab -> and changing your default boot device.

Not sure if it'll work with Vista, because there's usually some sort of install order you need for the OSes, but I guess there's always some sort of chance.

DVD burners are always slow as far as I know. It could be the amount of data you have burned on to the disk.

I know they can be slow, but it used to burn a full dvd in about 8-10 mins....now it take about 5 times as long.

If it is internal, check your IDE connections. if it is External, check your USB/FIREWIRE connections.
