Goodness. Those colors are so surreal. The second photo looks like a 3D render.
Haha, I like the irony in the no smoking image and the overall grittiness of it.

You have a very good eye. And your use of color is simply amazing.

Ohhh, I like! I love the first, third, and fourth ones especially. They remind me of my own style.

You've got a lot of potential! Keep up the good work! Watch out for blown highlights!

This thing is sticky, and I don't like it. I don't appreciate it.

I'm not normally a clouds type of person, but that shot is particularly interesting. You can't hardly tell whether it's clouds or maybe looking up towards the surface of a partially frozen Arctic ocean. The bench is also particularly sweet . I just like how its laid out.

How ya doing, buddy?

Wow! I agree with Kazyl about the colors. They're so vivid and vibrant!

I'm particularly fond of the first one for its color and simplicity.
I really love how everything in the second shot seems to be reaching for the distance.

The photo of the clouds looks very nice.

I also really liked the No Smoking shot, although I can't really explain why.

Great work!

I was speaking idiomatically.

Oh yeah, more stuff! I decided to work with flowers since my mom requested I make an 8x10 print for her to hang up on the wall, here is what I got.

What kind of DSLR are you using? I've been thinking about upgrading from my old very old SLR. The second shot in the first post is fantasitc!

The first one lacks direction. It doesn't seem like you're trying say anything with it - you're just showing a color contrast.

The second one is your best shot. The river and bridges provide a sense of place and move the viewer's eyes toward the focal point. I like it very much. Have you a high(er) resolution of it?

The bench shot is composed improperly methinks. You would want to convince the person to sit on the bench - by showing how quaint it looks - not show them what they would see from the bench. Perhaps you should have focused less on the sky. That's what I've taken from it anyway - my apologies if I'm mistaken ;_;
What I’m really trying to say is that it looks right, but it doesn’t feel right. I’m not sure if you get what I mean ;_;

The tumultuous clouds take away focus from the bright spot and somehow play with the viewer's focus - as if they were a cat and my eyes were a string. Very playful, but the bright spot gives it a sense of doom, foreboding and my eyes unwillingly gravitate toward it. I like it.

The smoking sign is too direct. It's almost IN YOUR FACE. I don't like it, but it's just a personal preference. It would work well if you had an agenda to go along with it - similar pictures, a cynical manifesto etc ...

The black and white bridge holds a lot of promise, but it feels like it's composed improperly. The pathway and the railings focus my eyes toward a spot, and then the buildings beyond it abruptly destroy the focus and dilute it with jagged edges. It would work cool if there was something at the end of the bridge – to take away the focus and the buildings behind would just be static background – not the focus.

The three flowers, while beautiful and well done, offer nothing new and I'm a cynical bastard so I'll say I don't like them

The last one is great, but I think your intent was to show how the cute little flower can survive and persist beside that slab of cement and dead leaves. But because the stone is so out of focus, it seems like it’s closer than it really is. It’s as if something is holding the angular slab and is about to drop it and flatten the poor flower ;_;
It's beautifully composed though - I love the contrast of the dead leaves and white gravel around it. Just the focus on the cement slab is off.

Protip: post HIGH resolution PNG pictures so that we can all steal them and be happy

Jam it back in, in the dark.

Neus: You're insightful critique is encouraging. Only recently have I thought about the meaning I'm trying to convey rather than just a pretty picture. Still working on that, and yes flowers are boring to me too.

I am using a Nikon D50 with........THE KIT LENS! Reason being is because I am purposefully limiting myself to just that. However, there are ocassions when I wish I had a zoom lens, but that's what I have my old cannon for.

Yes i'm well aware thanks. That doesn't diminish the fact that kit lenses are shitty ;_;~ ~

Kind of off topic but what old canon do you have? I was at a pawn shop this morning and i'm either going to get the AE-1 they had or a Minolta X-700.

They are indeed shitty and I'm saving up for the latest VR. I am using the AE-1 my mom had which has done me well so far.

From what I hear, the Nikon DSLR kit lenses are decent. I'm saving for a decent DSLR myself, perhaps the Nikon D70s. The Nikon D200 is quite pricey, but from the reviews I've read, well worth the extra dough.

In my opinion, the better shots are the smoking sign and the white flower. Everything else can use a little more work. The bridge offers nothing new. The bench looks like a snapshot, sadly. The black and white looks rather amateurish. The sunflower looks very unlively. Sunflower photos have been done again and again (because they're gorgeous flowers), and those that strike me most are those that are just in your face or just brimming with color. The pink flower again looks like a snapshot. The red flower can use a little off center techniques. And there is a lot of noise on the background.

Other than that, keep it up! I'm far from good myself; just adding my two cents.

Which VR? The new 18-200 VR is apparently heinously awesome. Also holler @ AE-1.

Ken Rockwell likes the 18-200VR. And he actually uses it, too.

Hehe.

If I ever get a Nikon DSLR, I will definitely get that lens. Although if I go with Nikon instead of Canon, I won't be able to use Canon's awesome 1:1-5:1 macro lens and tilt-shift lenses.

There's nowhere I can't reach.

USK KEN ROCKWELL.

Well the 18-200 is generally good. If you have enough money to blow then the 200-400 or 300 AFS VR are a lot better.

Yeah, the 18-200 is what I want but I might invest in a cheaper zoom lens. By the way, has anyone tried out an infrared filter on a Nikon D50?

Very true. On the other hand, while a lot of Kit lenses (*coughCanoncough*) suck, the Nikon ones are surprisingly good. The 18-55 AF-S that comes with the D50 produces very nice pictures with low distortion (at the 18mm end less distortion then the 18-70mm AF-S, even). While I wouldn't mind an aperture ring, for the price it's really a fantastic lens. I use it with great success on my D50. The 18-70mm AF-S that comes stock on the D70s is stunning. I have a friend who uses one on a D50 and I love it. High-Quality across the board, although the zoom doesn't respond well towards the wide end in my opinion. I'd like to eventually pick up either a telefoto lens or an 18-200VR (which would sadly cost more than my camera and the kit lens that came with it, but these things happen), but for now I'm quite pleased with the kit lens.

To photto: Stunning shots. I especially like the last one.

Your second picture is nicely done. It causes the viewer to look at every area and doesn't necessarily focus on one object. I like it.

I'll second on the second picture. The structure on the left looks a little too clean, and the columns appears cg. I guess I'm surprised because I've never seen a nice walkway under a highway like that in Los Angeles.

I like your pictures Photto.
Going out at night an shoot that shot... experimenting with the camera,
looking at the world arround you, seeing more than the ordinary man,
(Apart from basic skills) that's is the biggest part of what makes a real photographer.

By the way, flowers are not booring. It al depends on how you shoot them.
It may help not to put the subject in deadcenter.

Tell a story of what you see, through the lens.
Keep on shooting and shooting!
