From what I hear, the Nikon DSLR kit lenses are decent. I'm saving for a decent DSLR myself, perhaps the Nikon D70s. The Nikon D200 is quite pricey, but from the reviews I've read, well worth the extra dough.
In my opinion, the better shots are the smoking sign and the white flower. Everything else can use a little more work. The bridge offers nothing new. The bench looks like a snapshot, sadly. The black and white looks rather amateurish. The sunflower looks very unlively. Sunflower photos have been done again and again (because they're gorgeous flowers), and those that strike me most are those that are just in your face or just brimming with color. The pink flower again looks like a snapshot. The red flower can use a little off center techniques. And there is a lot of noise on the background.
Other than that, keep it up! I'm far from good myself; just adding my two cents.
