It sounds like a lot of the 'missing' features people are bitching about are going to (hopefully) be patched in a later firmware. Sounds like cross game invites & voice chat are the big ones that are going to eventually be addressed. Hell, even XMB access during PS2/movie playback sounds like it's currently being looked into. However long that will take, though, god only knows...

Still, I think it's pretty cool that they're finally getting around to it.

...

Three features I wouldn't mind seeing -

1) Option to choose pop-up/notification positions on screen. Say, lower right corner instead of the upper right corner. Sometimes that thing blocks part of a games HUD that I'm trying to see :/.

2) A cleaned up in-game XMB. It seems pretty limited right now as to what you can actually do while accessing the XMB from within a game, so I wouldn't mind having the option to only display the XMB features that are actually functional in-game.

3) The current 'level' of a friend displayed next to their PSN ID on the friends list. Maybe with the ability to sort by level. Being able to see whose on top, it might increase competition more than having to physically select each individual PSN ID to see what level they are and how you compare. I think it would be a neat little feature...

While none of these features are a necessity, I think that they would certainly enhance the experience. Here's to future updates, I guess...

Thanks for the heads up! Downloading now.

Don't know how much of the stuff I'll use aside from the messaging as far as in-game XMB goes, but it'll be interesting to check it all out, and of course there are the trophies.

Cant wait to try it out, Id like to find out what Id need to do to unlock those trophies. I wonder if they'd be 'backwards compatible'. What I mean is if we have already played the said game and have done the 'requirements' for a trophy, will we need to re-do the game just to get one?

no you have to "replay" those game to unlock the trophies and as for now there's only one game that support the trophies and it's super stardust HD. The rest will need a patch...

and anyone figure out how to change our profile now? >.>
Hints should be taken

Heh. I only wish this trophy bs came up way before. Otherwise all those trophy mission would've been done. They have a new upgrade for 5 bucks so that's better news ;p.

Inhert : I think you go to where your friend's list is. Looks ok.

So far you can't really access your music for any of the games except and obviously Super Stardust. When you start the game up, it updates automatically and you enter in the trophy option and it'll synch with the game. Nice add so far but it is the early stage so its ok. Just annoyed that you can't access your music for 98% of the games.

Maybe a patch is still needed for the other games to make use of this music thingamabob I only wish we can finally use our own images as our avatars. The available ones... just...are... ugh.

As for the thread title, I dont think my PS3's fan noise is... noisy. I barely hear it at all, unless it gets so hot here in my room

I read somewhere today that Criterion are going to be able to apply Trophies retroactively for Burnout Paradise because of the way it stores user data, so anything you would have got you will get a Trophy for. No good for me, since I have BP on the 360, but it's ace that they're able to do that. I would like to think Uncharted can be the same as they clearly have a system in place for monitoring stats for their own 'medals' in-game system.

The whole reason Burnout Paradise is able to do trophy achievements retroactively is because Criterion specifically set up Burnouts save files to be bound to each players unique PSN ID - thus making the trading of game save files among other players impossible (which is exactly what Sony is trying to prevent). They said they knew that the whole trophy system was coming, and took extra precautions to allow trophies to be retroactive:

From the Playstation Blog:
Quote:
Simon Phipps | July 1st, 2008 at 10:34 am

Okay, here’s what we can say about the details:

* Trophies will be retroactive, so, if you’ve achieved something today, the day the update arrives (not Cagney, we want to emphasise) that will be reflected in your Trophies.

* Your Burnout Paradise save game has always been locked to your PSN id - so there’s never been any chance of trading save games - your progress is your progress (we have a way of thinking ahead for this kind of stuff!)

* The Save Game Analyser works with a special export file that is exported when you do a manual save from the game, not your encrypted save game file - so there’s no chance that anyone could hack that

* That’s as much as we can reveal right now - if you know us and our site, we’ll let you know as soon as we are confident to do so

Thanks for all of the support and positive comments, guys - we really appreciate it.
Whether developers for other games also implemented these kinds of practices (such as Naughty Dawg), we still don't know.

Additional Spam:
Uh oh. Looks like Sony pulled the 2.4 update as it has reportedly bricked some systems...

Dammit. I still haven't updated mine, and was looking forward to updating it when I got back from work :/.

but yeah, I heard that there were many problems and other than the very long download I didn't have any problems myself. Hopefully no one else here had any problems. We have very few ps3 users as it is.
Anyways, WTF sony!

I didn't download the update...ironically because I was lazy and didn't want to. Glad I didn't though.

I downloaded the update this morning (from the website before it got taken down) and installed it from a CompactFlash card. Update went smoothly, no problems occurred after installation.

i didn't have any problems with the update as well. but it does take a bit of time to competely load the xmb in a game. so far there's only one game that supports trophies and custom soundtracks.

i bet those bricked ps3s were caused by people turning off the ps3 while the update was installing.

Hmm... Just a heads up.. Firmware 2.41 is up. I noticed something new to the update process. A warning now, not to turn off the system until the update process is done. "By doing so your PS3 may not be able to restart anymore" or something to that effect. With an option to turn off the PS3 after the update has been finished. (Finished downloading or finished updating as a whole?) I didnt really understand

Anyways, updating now.

didn't they already have a warning not to turn off your ps3 during updates and installs and blah.
They should have more of a "Backup your shit on a usb" warning which is what i'm going to do before each update now. Nothing happened to my ps3 during 2.40 update but if I had known all the problems beforehand, I might of hesitated. It's one thing to format your hdd do get your ps3 up and running again, but I don't want to lose all my saved data as well.
I'll go update later

Did anyone's PS3 fuck up after 2.40 here?

Anyway 2.41 fixes the problem that caused the 2.40 HDDs to screw up. Besides that it added an option to shut off the PS3 after updating, and changed the look and feel of the Platinum trophy.

2.40 worked well for me... What they should do in the next updates is to have the update process be done automatically (no more pushing of the PS button to turn on the controller again and go through the terms and conditions blah blah blah.)

As well as let us use our own pictures for our PSN ID's avatars

And the ability to take screenshots with any game, movie, screen that the PS3 is showing at any moment. That'll be nice.
