That's probably the case for the US version.

I remember trying my European version on a normal 3.50 firmware and it said I need to update, plus the UMD comes with 3.51.

I have question for the PSPhatcats.

I recently got my PSP back from a friend of mine and as such it's still running 3.03 OE-B.

FFT requires 3.51 at least, so my question is: is 3.71m33 worth it? I see some talk about trouble with it, so would it be less of a hassle for me to just upgrade to some previous (stable, working) custom firmware instead? Which one would that be then?

I just don't want to upgrade to find something that used to work on my PSP now magically won't.
Not just m33 team but Dark Alex created 3.71 m33-2 with 1.50 kernel-2 patch. In short, FFT works in that version. I have no problems with it. No bricks, etc. Not unless you're playing cps2-mvs emulators. Unfortunately it resets itself when you turn it off during gameplay.

Final Fantasy Tactics (European Version) works just fine on my 3.40 OE-A.

Hm, curious. I'll just have to take your word on it and must have looked at the version number wrong.

Has 3.40 OE-A had compatibility/stability issues with certain emulators or sleep mode or something similar?

And will I be able to directly update my 3.03 OE-B to 3.40 OE-A or do I need to do some fancy voodoo trickery and extra application hunting beforehand?

You'll have to sacrifice all 50 of your copies of ICO in order to update.

Or you can update to the latest 3.71 M33 (except I prefer 3.52 M33), which has yet to have any issues.

Barring the slowdown someone complained about, which may or may not be cause of the firmware.

And if there's no issues, why would you prefer 3.52 M33?

Some games require a higher firmware, so if you're going to update, you might as well go with the higher one. 3.71 M33, I hear, is "unstable".

But you just said there aren't any issues

See this is why I asked in the first place. There's really not that many upcoming PSP games I look forward to, so I'm in no rush to update to the latest firmwares if it means compromise or something of mine will no longer work as well.

Just update to 3.40 OE-A, Qwarky. No special tricks required. I think it's the most stable custom firmware out there, and most newer PSP games work fine with it. Among the more recent ones, I've tried Final Fantasy Tactics and the God of War demo and both run fine. I'm using my PSP regularly and can't think of a single reason to update to a newer firmware.

I can really only think of Goku Makaimura Kai from upcoming PSP titles, but there's no telling which firmware it'll require. Might as well 3.40 till I find out.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

You must have read wrong, I meant 3.71 is unstable, 3.51 isn't (as much? =P). But if 3.40 OE can play the current games now, then that's cool. Good luck.

Sorry to bother you guys with the most noobish and common question that you's must get. But, is there yet a means to install custom firmware on a PSP that has official 3.71 firmware?

I'm thinking of getting a slim soon and use it for my legit stuff (like PS3 connectivity) and keep my old one for the... well "other" stuff.

Thanks for the help guys.

Every PSP (phat or slim) on any firmware can be downgraded with the Pandora. You'll need an extra PSP with 1.5 homebrew (custom firmware) to create the Pandora battery/memory card.

[Guide] Unbrick or Downgrade any PSP using the Pandora Battery - QJ.NET Forums

And if you're going to downgrade the slim, use Despertar del Cementerio V3

Well then perhaps I'll just save myself from a ton of work and just downgrade the stock PSP Slim (I don't have a second one & all my friends have 3.71). What firmware do they have out of the box? And do you have a link to that "Despertar del Cementerio V3" ?

I must have worded it wrong. You also need the Pandora battery to downgrade the slim. Just that you'll have to use Despertar del Cementerio V3 when creating a Pandora memory stick.

But yeah, 3.40 sounds most effortless for now, so I'll try that first.

So then the PSP Slim is too up to date to even use the Lumines downgrade then is it?

The only way (I know of) to change a slim's firmware is with the pandora's battery method.
