[PC] Reccomend-a-Game (and proper spelling)

So, you've played a game that you really like, and you want to find more like it. Use this thread to have somebody reccomend you a game of the same genre/style etc etc.

I really loved Tie "Fighter". The original (I think it was 1995 or 1998.) The gameplay was super. Can anybody reccomend a similar game?

Only space-sims I've ever played are the Wing Commander games. They're not that easy to find and run unfortunately.

Not too long ago I found myself obsessed with some old PC favorites. They're actually 2D side-scrollers, one called Zeliard and the other called Firehawk: Second Contact (sequel to Thexder). They're definitely more than 10 years old, and they work great on Dosbox.

If you like Tie Fighter, I'd wager that you'd like ordinary arcade-y flight sims. Check out the Ace Combat series, perhaps.

Yeah, the Lucasarts Tie Fighter & X-Wing games we're very good. They should make some new ones, I love the way missions we're designed

But Tie Fighter wasn't arcade style.

Second the Freespace series they ruled!

Also the WingCommander series were the top of space flight sim back in the day. Only drawback for most of these games is the visual representation, but as you went through tie fighter that won't really matter for you does it?

One the the newer games that could also be of interest is the X series. I played X2 for some time and it's great it's really big though and not only shooting it's a lot deeper than that!

I third the Freespace mention.
Especially Freespace 2. Its a lot like Tie fighter but with better missles and graphics lol.

And the size of some of the ships and the way they fight.
I guarantee you, you will feel like in a TRUE interstellar war.

Well I was hoping for something more modern/better graphics, but I will check out Freespace.

This is, IMO, the best game ever made, and here's why...

For starters, it's a shooter, but not just any type of shooter, and RPG/Shooter. This means that you can upgrade your skill points and bioaugmentations as you progress through the game, gaining new skills, and getting better at wielding certain classes of guns, melee weapons, or picking locks/hacking computers/using medpacks/etc... Another thing that makes this game amazing is it's endless replayability. Because of the RPG influences the game is wide open, lots of side missions to do, lots of free roaming, PLENTY of places to explore, hundreds of ways to tackle certain obstacles, the works. You can play stealthily, cockily(word?), be conservative, or very liberal in the way you play. There are a ton of weapons, and the way the inventory works is that you have a certain number of squares that you can fill up, certain weapons are bigger, and take up more room, meaning you have to plan what you use carefully.

The main thing that makes this game so amazing, however, is the atmosphere. It's kind of an industrial-cyber-punk atmosphere, in the year 2057, with realistic insights into the near future. Large corporations and factions at play, and terrorism actually a threat to the masses. Also, the way the game is set up, there is a lot of referencing to things you will never see in the game, meaning that the world feels a lot bigger than your average video game, giving you the feeling of being only a small part in the world.

The game is also really long, and travels to many different destinations, such as Hong Kong, New York, Paris, and even Area 51. This also gives you a feeling of a large world, and adds to the atmosphere. The music in the game is also great, with very appropriate music for the settings you are in, and changing music when combat ensues(sp?).

The characters are also very easy to get attached to, and the game really pulls you in, involving you emotionally(another RPG trait). The way the game unfolds really gets you caring for certain characters and absolutely despising(sp?) others. It's great...

All in all, I'd suggest this game for fans of shooters and rpgs alike. It can be found for like 10 bucks in the bargain section of most game stores, and if you are going to get it, look for the GOTY edition, because it comes with multiplayer, which is really unique and fun for this game.

That's my two cents of recommendation...

I've played Deus Ex Invisible war, but I stopped playing part way through. It was alright, but It couldn't compete with the other game I was playing at the time; Half-Life 2.

Heroes of Might and Magic II:
If you like turn based RPGs and like RTS style build up of units, you'll love this game. It has atmosphere, heart and some great cartoon style graphics. I think it's the best HoMM game in the series and represents the pinnace of PC gaming (in that magical 1997-1999 era).

I preffered Heroes of Might and Magic III, personally.

Yes, well either game is a good choice for some turn-based fantasy all night sessions. For such a slow paced game, it's extremely addictive.

OMG, I'm so sorry, can I get you some medicine or something?:aargh: Another one struck down by Invisible War...a shame...

That game is an absolute DISGRACE to the series, and ultimately led to the bankruptcy of ion storm, one of the parent companies. IW is NOTHING like the original Deus Ex, and I suggest that if you played Invisible War, and hated it, play Deus Ex and forget everything that you ever did in IW.

Eughhhh...It gives me the shivers...

Back in the day, I heard Independance War was good (I've never played it myself). Also you should give Aliens vs Predator 2 a try. It perfectly reflects the atmosphere of the movies, playing as a Predator never gets old. It's like playing 3 different fps games.

If anyone's looking for a simple, but addicting, top-down space fighter game, check out Continuum, also known as SubSpace. It's free for download and to play, it's awesome, and there are tons of different arenas with TONS of people playing it.

Psychonauts - I usually don't care for platformers but this game shattered my trend and threw away the pieces. Ultimate wit and humour mixed in with psychic powers and a terribly innovative and diverse range of mind worlds. Does any game come close to this?

Grim Fandango - I respect this game, but I was basically reading a faq every moment of the game, since I'm not a clever adventure puzzle solver. The character models, story concept and environment were unique. Same guy who made Psychonauts was a part of this too!

D - I liked D, even though it was short.

Dilbert's Desktop Games - Oh score! No need for the cd after installation, and a bunch of funny games with frolicking engineers and their frustrations. Excellent distractions.
